    Marquis d'Angerville

The pioneering Marquis d’Angerville was at the forefront of the struggle to fight corruption and protect standards in the 1920s. He was one of the first to introduce estate bottling. Francois Divivier joined Guillaume d’Angerville; with smaller yields and older vines their Burgundy is silky, aromatic and long lived.

Wafting from the glass with beautiful aromas of rose petal, violets, cherries and raspberries, the 2017 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Angles is medium-bodied, ample and charming, with an exuberantly expressive core of pure, succulent fruit, framed by fine, chalky tannins.

The 2018 Volnay Clos des Angles 1er Cru comes from a vintage after which half the vineyard was uprooted due to the aged vines that were planted in the 1950s. It has quite an intense bouquet of blueberry and wild strawberry fruit, a little more precocious than the Les Fremiets. The pure, poised palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins and flavors of black cherry and strawberry pastilles. Very smooth toward the finish, which feels caressing. This Clos des Angles will be approachable and difficult to resist in its youth.

Good medium red. Lovely perfume of raspberry and flowers complicated by subtle soil tones. Seamless, balanced and moderately rich, offering nuanced flavors of red fruits, flowers, earth, herbs and spices and no rough edges. This seems fully mature but has the spine and energy to last. Finishes with refined tannins, subtle sweetness and lovely slow-building savory length. Incidentally, the last time I tried this wine--in 2017 at the estate--it was silky and sweet but a bit more decadent and seemed to be evolving quickly. But, judging from the wine's low pH, this bottle may well be more representative. It was certainly firmer and more delineated. (13.15% alcohol; September 26 harvest; 35 h/h; 3.25 pH)

Harvested 19th-24th September: A very distinctive nose of spice and cinnamon. The fruit is gorgeous, very round. This is a really harmonious well-balanced wine with a silky, supple mouth coating texture. Drinking beautifully now, I expect the 2002 will hold for years because of its balance.

Smudgy crimson. Quite raw still on the nose - although wonderfully subtle and gorgeous on the palate. Dry finish and slightly crackling tannins - sort of taffeta. Great intensity but very noble. Almost grating energy but wonderful intensity. Fantastic texture, intensity and complete. Hidden. Liquorice.

The 2017 Volnay Clos des Ducs 1er Cru is the famous crown jewel monopole of the domaine, ostensibly the rear garden with its own spring. Initially it is showing some reduction on the nose, although it dissipates with aeration. It is certainly reticent at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied with a gentle grip on the entry. It provides that arching structure that defines this vineyard and gives it its longevity, yet paradoxically the mouth sensation is supple and smooth, with just a touch of spice tingling on the finish. Noble, and aristocratic - just how a Clos des Ducs ought to be.

The 2018 Volnay Clos des Ducs 1er Cru, the famous 2.15-hectare monopole of the domaine, is matured in around 25% new oak, although Guillaume d’Angerville mentioned that he intends to use less new oak in the future. It has a very intense bouquet of raspberry preserve, kirsch, blood orange and sous-bois aromas, all displaying wonderful delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with fabulous density and complexity, offering brambly red fruit, blood orange, orange peel, suggestions of dark chocolate and, of course, wonderful mineral tension on the persistent finish, which fans out beautifully. This is an exceptionally fine Volnay that will age for 30–40 years.

The 2019 Volnay Clos des Ducs 1er Cru has a typically aristocratic nose with layers of red and black fruit infused with shaved black truffle, crushed stone and pressed iris petals. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy saturated tannins, a voluminous Clos des Ducs that fills the mouth. Maybe a little spicier than usual, there is a generous pinch of cracked black pepper towards the finish and its normal extremely persistent aftertaste. Class from start to finish, cellar this for several years before even thinking about opening a bottle.

The 2021 Volnay Clos des Ducs 1er Cru, whose illustrious pedigree did not preclude it from frost damage, nevertheless has a distinctive nose that seems anomalous to d'Angerville's other crus: darker fruit, much more marine-influenced, to the point where you would imagine there might be stems (it is 100% de-stemmed like the other crus). The palate is very well structured, edgier than the Champans, more saline with modest grip towards the slightly saturnine finish. This will require 3-4 years in bottle. Excellent, somehow a bit…enigmatic.

The 2015 Volnay 1er Cru Fremiets was showing very well from bottle, wafting from the glass with notes of raspberry, cherry, spice and orange rind that offer little hint of the savory complexity to come with bottle age. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, structured around juicy acids and a fine-grained but firm chassis of tannins that asserts itself on the finish. Fremiets sits above the Clos des Angles, and its shallower soils tend to issue in wines with notable crunch and tension.

The 2020 Volnay Fremiet 1er Cru has a perfumed bouquet with redcurrant, raspberry sorbet and sous-bois aromas that offers a subtle balsam element with time. The palate is well balanced, fresh and vibrant with crunchy red berry fruit. Good acidity here, classic in style with a linear finish, a hint of pepperiness on the aftertaste. Give this 4-5 years in bottle before broaching because it has an endearing feisty character.

    Vinous (92-94)

The 2020 Volnay Fremiet 1er Cru has a perfumed bouquet with redcurrant, raspberry sorbet and sous-bois aromas that offers a subtle balsam element with time. The palate is well balanced, fresh and vibrant with crunchy red berry fruit. Good acidity here, classic in style with a linear finish, a hint of pepperiness on the aftertaste. Give this 4-5 years in bottle before broaching because it has an endearing feisty character.

    Vinous (91-93)

The 2021 Volnay Fremiet 1er Cru has a very pure and open bouquet, perfumed red cherry and wild strawberry fruit laced with wilted rose petals. Not powerful yet nicely focused. The palate is medium-bodied with gentle but insistent grip, more structure than the Clos des Angles with a touch of white pepper towards the finish. Fine persistence. This is a Volnay to cherish over the next 15-20 years.
