Marquis d'Angerville
The pioneering Marquis d’Angerville was at the forefront of the struggle to fight corruption and protect standards in the 1920s. He was one of the first to introduce estate bottling. Francois Divivier joined Guillaume d’Angerville; with smaller yields and older vines their Burgundy is silky, aromatic and long lived.

Vinous (90-92)The 2018 Meursault Santenots 1er Cru was the first vineyard picked this vintage, whereas it can often be the last. It has an attractive bouquet of grilled walnut and light smoky aromas, perhaps not quite as intense as recent vintages. The palate is well balanced with a slightly honeyed entry, offering orange pith and light apricot notes and a smooth, almond-tinged finish. Fine. |

Vinous (88-90)The 2019 Pommard Combes Dessus 1er Cru has a straightforward, maybe slightly rustic bouquet compared to the domaine’s more sensual Volnays. The palate is well balanced with sappy red berry fruit, quite saline on the back palate with a welcome touch of spice on the succulent finish. It just needs the aromatics to up their game. |

Vinous (91-93)The 2017 Volnay 1er Cru is a blend of Les Pitures and Les Mitans as usual. It has an attractive dark cherry and crushed strawberry bouquet with fine mineralité, though not powerful. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, cohesive dark berry fruit with hints of cola and a dash of spice towards the finish. Excellent. There is a gentle crescendo here that I admire. |

Wine Advocate (91-93)The 2013 Volnay 1er Cru Caillerets has a more limestone-scented bouquet, the fruit a little redder than that of Fremiets, opening with wilted rose-petal scents infusing the strawberry and red currant aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with a little more flesh than the aforementioned premier cru, but maintaining appreciable balance and minerality that is neatly assimilated on the sappy finish. This should blossom once in bottle. There is class here. |

Vinous (92-94)The 2018 Volnay Les Caillerets 1er Cru includes an additional 0.23-hectare adjoining parcel of old vines purchased in 2013 that represents a 50% increase in acreage. It has a more reticent bouquet compared to its siblings, demanding coaxing from the glass to revealing morello cherry, raspberry preserve and rose petal aromas. Hints of blood orange develop with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with darker berry fruit than d’Angerville’s other Volnay, and a little spicier, displaying impressive depth and grip toward the finish. It will require 5–6 years in bottle. Excellent. |

Vinous (90-92)Good bright medium red. Sweet red fruits, licorice and minerals on the nose. Impeccably balanced and harmonious Volnay, finishing clean, spicy and perfumed, with understated tannins. |

Vinous (91+)Medium red. Enticing nose offers black cherry, flowers, red licorice and minerals. Suppler and broader but less refined on entry than the Taillepieds, with distinctly darker fruit flavors. Strong acidity ultimately gives this pure wine a youthfully austere character. Finishes with excellent length and spice character. This tight wine calls for five years of cellaring. |

Vinous (94)In a vintage in which so many wines are all about intensity, 2009 Marquis d’Angerville’s Volnay Champans (magnum) impresses for its perfume, delineated fruit and fabulous overall balance. Refined and impeccable in its sense of restraint, the 2009 is so very pretty and expressive. Silky tannins round out the racy, polished finish. What a gorgeous wine this is. 94 |

Vinous (95)The 2010 Volnay Champans 1er Cru is an exquisite wine that in my opinion surpasses the Taillepieds served alongside. It is just beginning to show a little bricking on the rim. The bouquet is fresh and vibrant with raspberry, potpourri and loamy scents - just so vivid and bright. The palate is medium-bodied with plenty of red berry fruit, slightly tart in style with superb tension and fine acidity. Cranberry and raspberry spring through towards the finish that displays impressive tension. This is maturing beautifully. Tasted an the annual Marquis d'Angerville tasting in London. |

Wine Advocate (92-94)The 2013 Volnay 1er Cru Champans has a feisty, much more gourmand bouquet compared to its siblings at this early stage with almost meaty red berry fruit infused with limestone/flinty scents. The palate is very focused with an abiding sense of symmetry, long in the mouth with fine tannins (although not as filigree as the Taillepieds) but with the same silky and harmonious texture toward the long finish. Excellent. |

Wine Advocate (93+)In contrast to the precocious 2017, the 2016 Volnay 1er Cru Les Champans is tight-knit and reserved and will demand patience. Offering up aromas of plums, cherries, violets, dark chocolate and forest floor, the wine is, medium to full-bodied, chewy and firm, with lovely depth at the core but an imposing, muscular chassis of fine-grained tannin that asserts itself on the finish. I have no concerns about the balance of this Champans, but readers should plan on waiting at least a dozen years before pulling corks. |

Vinous (93-95)The 2019 Volnay Les Champans 1er Cru follows the Taillepieds and maybe it should have been the other way round since this is much more closed and broody. Earthy red berry fruit, touches of truffle and bay eventually emerge from the glass. Vinous (91+)Very dark red. Brooding, slightly reduced aromas of black raspberry, menthol, mint, licorice and leather, plus a distinct impression of liqueur-like dried fruits. Thick, tactile and dry; this very powerful Volnay shows as much soil as fruit today. Strong tannins saturate the sides of the mouth and tongue, mostly neutralizing the wine's sweetness. A large-scaled and extreme style but boasts good freshness. This big boy still needs more time in bottle to soften. I suspect that it will go on for another couple of decades. In response to the extreme heat that summer and the very early harvest at the end of August, Renaud de Villette carried out a shorter-then-normal cuvaison, followed by a relatively short élevage with less new oak than usual.
