Massolino Barolo 2015 (12x75cl)

Wine Advocate (93)

This is the bread-and-butter wine for the folks at Massolino, and great care is taken to make sure they get it right year after year. The 2015 Barolo is almost all fruit from Serralunga d'Alba (this township makes up 99% of the blend), with a tiny part from Castiglione Falletto. Fruit comes from five vineyard sites, including Briccolina, Collaretto, Broglio and Le Turne, all in Serralunga d'Alba. The tiny part of Castiglione Falletto fruit comes from the Parussi cru. The complex nature of the blend represents old-school Barolo tradition, and it works beautifully in a warm vintage such as this. (That Serralunga d'Alba's rich marlstone soil keeps the moisture of the vintage locked within.) This is a full and exuberant expression with a well-defined profile of spice, rusty nail, potting soil and truffle. Overall, this vintage is accessible, soft and delicious from the start.

Massolino Barolo 2017 (12x75cl)

Vinous (92)

The 2017 Barolo is a gorgeous, harmonious wine. In this vintage, the straight Barolo is a bit lighter than normal, as most wines are, but it is so impeccably balanced. Pliant and inviting, the 2017 will be pleasurable to drink in another year or two. The purity of the flavors is just striking. Red berry fruit, rose petal, mint, cinnamon and crushed rose petal are some of the many aromas and flavors that grace this exquisite Barolo from the Massolino family. So many 2017s are marked by sinewy tannins, here, they are especially fine.

Massolino Barolo Margheria 2015 (1x150cl)

Wine Advocate (94)

The 2015 Barolo Margheria is the first single-vinyard Barolo I tasted from Massolino in a lineup that started with the most delicate wine and ended with the most powerful expression. Considering that we are talking about Serralunga d'Alba (the township known for the most powerful Baroli overall), the word "delicate" should be taken with a grain of salt. The vines here are 37 years old, and the soils are slightly looser and sandier in nature. This wine is just slightly more accessible than the other cru expressions with elegant mineral notes that frame dark fruit, spice and pressed violets. This could be a good pairing opportunity with Florentine tripe in a tomato sauce.

Massolino Barolo Margheria 2016 (6x75cl)

Vinous (95+)

The 2016 Barolo Margheria is super-refined and elegant, but it is also classically austere, as so many top wines are in this vintage. Bright red berry fruit, wild flowers, mint, blood orange, rose petal and cinnamon all grace this very pretty, nuanced Barolo. The Margheria is medium in body, and despite its austerity, it is also very pretty, not to mention incredibly inviting. It will be even better in another few years, once the tannins soften. Readers will have to be patient.

Vinous (96)

The 2016 Barolo Parafada is fabulous. In fact, the 2016 is one of the best - if not the best - Parafadas I have ever tasted at Massolino. The natural richness of this site marries with the translucence of the year to produce a weightless yet powerful, highly nuanced Barolo that hits all the right notes. Dark cherry, lavender, spice, mint, rose petal and licorice develop in the glass, but it is the interplay of richness and lightness that elevates the Parafada into the realm of the truly sublime. I have never tasted a Parafada like this here. What a wine!

Massolino Barolo Parafada 2017 (1x150cl)

Vinous (93)

The 2017 Barolo Parafada comes across as compact and closed in on itself. There is plenty of depth and density, but the Parafada is very tightly wound at this stage. It will be interesting to see what time in bottle brings. Today, the 2017 feels squashed and compact.

Massolino Barolo Parussi 2015 (1x150cl)

Wine Advocate (95)

This wine was not made in 2014, when this vineyard site in Castiglione Falletto was hit by not one but two violent hailstorms. Thankfully, the 2015 Barolo Parussi comes from a trouble-free growing season and has resulted in one of the best expressions of the cru made by Massolino thus far, with the first vintage produced in 2007. This site sees a unique soil profile, with sand that is much richer in organic materials compared to the estate's historic vineyard sites. The terrain enjoys two exposures because the vines are planted over the crest of a hill. Harvest comes later here, as well, because the growing cycle is slower and Parussi is one of the last parcels to show beautiful leaf color in the autumn. Thanks to all those extra variables, the winemaking team has a little more to play with in order to achieve complexity and integration. In our progression from least to most powerful single-vineyard wines tasted, this was the third wine in the lineup. Indeed, this wine offers more "grasso" or body weight and volume. Dark mineral tones make for an elegant finish. However, the tannins are very young and need more time to soften. This is your proverbial cellar wine.

Massolino Barolo Parussi 2016 (6x75cl)

Vinous (95)

The 2016 Barolo Parussi is the most overt and fruity of the 2016s. That is not a bad thing at all, as it gives the wine striking immediacy and mid-palate sweetness. Succulent red and purplish berry fruit, spice and mint come together in the glass. Silky, floral and medium in body, the Parussi captures all of the sensuality that is typical of the Barolos of Castiglione Falletto. Best of all, the Parussi will drink well earlier than the wines from Serralunga will.

Massolino Barolo Vigna Rionda Riserva 2004 (1x500cl)

Wine Advocate (96)

The 2004 Barolo Riserva Vigna Rionda reveals superb complexity and nuance in a never-ending display of aromas and flavors that saturate the palate. Tobacco, truffles, spices, licorice and dark fruit swirl around in the glass as the wine continues to gain volume and depth with air. The tannins are massive yet beautifully balanced and the stage seems set for the 2004 to develop into one of the finest Vigna Riondas crafted here. Constantly changing in the glass, the wine captures that characteristic Rionda elusiveness that invites a second taste and then a third. In sum, it is a Barolo that will provide endless fascination for many years to come. Incredibly, it tastes almost as youthful as it did from barrel a few years ago! Anticipated maturity: 2016-2031.

The 2006 Barolo Riserva Vigna Rionda is young – very young. Currently the fruit remains quite primary and the aromatics have yet to develop. Still, it is impossible not to admire the wine’s structure and the sheer integrity of its fruit. I especially like the way the 2006 continues to open up as it sits in the glass. This is a hugely promising wine from the Massolino brothers, but readers will have to be patient. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2031.

Rose water, orange zest, cinnamon, sage, mint and dried cherry are some of the many nuances that give the 2012 its aromatic top notes, and all of the elements fall into place effortlessly. Relatively open-knit for a young Rionda, this should drink well with minimal cellaring. The 2012 doesn't quite have the explosive energy of vintages like 2010, 2013 or 2014, but it will offer tons of pleasure sooner than any of those wines. I loved it.

Hailing from one of the most celebrated vineyards in the entire denomination, this focused beauty boasts layers of complexity and depth, starting with its classic Nebbiolo aromas of forest floor, new leather, violet and wild berry. Balanced and firmly structured, the palate shows tension, power and elegance, delivering succulent Morello cherry, crushed raspberry, tobacco and licorice alongside firm, aristocratic tannins. It's still young but already beautifully balanced, with bright acidity.

Dark red and purplish berry fruit, mint, lavender, spice and hard candy infuse the 2014 with striking layers of nuance. But what really impresses about the 2014 is its depth and huge vertical build. All the elements fall into place in a sumptuous, deep Barolo that screams with character. Beams of tannin punctuate the finish.

Massolino Barolo Parafada 2016 (1x150cl)

Wine Spectator (94)

Licorice, tar and spice are the flavor themes in this red, along with sanguine and iron notes. A lean wine, with dense, chewy tannins and a tight finish. This gets juicier with aeration, just needs time. Best from 2015 through 2028. 200 cases imported. -BS

Massolino Barolo Vigna Rionda Riserva 2006 (1x150cl)

Wine Advocate (95+)

The 2006 Barolo Riserva Vigna Rionda is young – very young. Currently the fruit remains quite primary and the aromatics have yet to develop. Still, it is impossible not to admire the wine’s structure and the sheer integrity of its fruit. I especially like the way the 2006 continues to open up as it sits in the glass. This is a hugely promising wine from the Massolino brothers, but readers will have to be patient. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2031.

Massolino Barolo Vigna Rionda Riserva 2012 (1x150cl)

Vinous-Antonio Galloni (95)

Readers will find a silky, nuanced Barolo in the 2012 Riserva Vigna Rionda. I loved it.

Massolino Barolo Vigna Rionda Riserva 2013 (6x75cl)

Wine Enthusiast (98)

Hailing from one of the most celebrated vineyards in the entire denomination, this focused beauty boasts layers of complexity and depth, starting with its classic Nebbiolo aromas of forest floor, new leather, violet and wild berry. Balanced and firmly structured, the palate shows tension, power and elegance, delivering succulent Morello cherry, crushed raspberry, tobacco and licorice alongside firm, aristocratic tannins. It's still young but already beautifully balanced, with bright acidity.

Massolino Barolo Vigna Rionda Riserva 2014 (6x75cl)

Vinous (98+)

The 2014 Barolo Riserva Vigna Rionda is a stunning wine. Sweet, perfumed and deep, the 2014 is off-the-charts great. Massolino's 2014 is one of the greatest Vigna Riondas I have ever tasted.
