Méo-Camuzet
About Domaine Méo-Camuzet
Domaine Méo-Camuzet is one of Burgundy’s big names. Until 1988 most of the holdings were leased out. Now Jean-Nicolas Méo and Christian Faurois are making some of Cote d’Or’s best wine. Using organic farming on their great plots; they boast four Grand Cru and ten Premier Cru sites in Nuits St George and Vosne-Romanée.
Today, the fortunes of this magical Domaine and its standing as a winemaking entity could not be further removed from this period which, quite shockingly, actually saw a sizable share of its fruit sold to négociants! The proud master of over 2.5 hectares of Grands Crus and 8 of 1er, some of the most hallowed terroir in Nuits-St-Georges and Vosne-Romanée is owned and its fruit vinified by Méo-Camuzet.
Prior to the arrival of current stewards Jean-Nicholas Méo and Christian Faurois, two of the most monumental Burgundian personalities were fundamental in the history of Méo-Camuzet. The first being its namesake Etienne Camuzet, an important political figure in the early 20th century who, aside from purchasing the bulk of what we know as Domaine Méo-Camuzet holdings today including Château de Clos de Vougeot (later gifted to the Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin), made numerous important decisions throughout the region with regards to what parcels could be included in Grand Cru classification.
The second, and quite possibly the single greatest Burgundian winemaker of the 20th century, was Henri Jayer. Specifically invited by the owners of Domaine Méo-Camuzet to tend to their vines since the 1940s due to his already formidable reputation, the masterful vigneron remained a sharecropper of the Domaine’s holdings until 1988 when it moved to vinify its plots itself. Following the transformation of Domaine Méo-Camuzet into an almighty winemaking presence in its own right, Jayer remained a consultant and was utterly instrumental in its ascension to the very pinnacle of Burgundian fine wine.

Vinous (94-96)
The 2020 Corton Clos Rognet Grand Cru has a little more precision on the nose than the Corton-Perrières, focused and quite energetic. The palate is medium-bodied with more strictness, quite serious with wonderful tension on the finish. This builds marvellously in the mouth. Do not overlook this excellent Corton.Inc. VAT£1,793.15 -
Burghound (92-95)
Here too there is enough reduction to render the nose impossible to properly read. The sleek and beautifully concentrated flavors are filled with both fine detail and underlying tension, all wrapped in a moderately austere, complex and strikingly long finale. Excellent potential.Inc. VAT£1,064.80 -

The 2017 Corton-Perrières Grand Cru has quite a punchy nose, one that wants to be noticed, offering copious dark cherry, wild strawberry and bergamot aromas and becoming ever more floral with aeration. The medium-bodied palate is quite sweet, featuring a touch of fig confit on the entry and candied orange peel lacing the vibrant red fruit. The 10% stem addition lends a little spice on the finish. This is perhaps more expressive than previous vintages I have encountered at this stage in the past.Inc. VAT£952.20 -
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-95)
A little dark centre here with concentrated fruit on the nose, and a glossiness partly from the oak. A touch of reduction or maybe the 10% stems which have been added back. This is quite severe at the back: this time the stems are to give flesh, by improving the entry on the palate.Inc. VAT£1,399.55 -

The 2020 Corton-Perrières Grand Cru has a refined nose that gently unfurls in the glass with dark cherries and bilberry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe and quite bold tannins, fine acidity, quite dense and a little sinewy yet maintaining fine definition. Give this 4-5 years in bottle.Inc. VAT£717.18 -

Rich dark purple, with an evidently ripe nose at 14.3%. The cherries may eb on the richer side but they are not cooked. The wine is staying in very good shape because this vineyard always delivers a mineral crunch at the back. A lovely wine which holds its own here very well. I think the best he has made. The 2020 Echézeaux Grand Cru has a crisp, quite pure bouquet with a mixture of red and blue fruit, a touch of violet, maybe just a bit pinched at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied with a sappy opening, quite chewy compared to others and at the moment, this just attenuates a little on the finish. I need to be more convinced by this cuvée, at the moment, surpassed by their top-notch Premier Crus.Inc. VAT£657.72 -
(1x75cl) 2014Vinous (88-90)
Bright, dark red. Red soil aromas of redcurrant, rust and minerals. Linear and upright, even a bit youthfully austere, but with attractively sweet red fruit flavors backed up by a firm mineral spine. The yield here was a low 25 hectoliters per hectare. (Méo's Pommard, from a single hail-affected source in 2014, was too reduced to assess in November. )Inc. VAT£146.93 -

Black centre with purple rim. Jean-Nicolas finds this both upright and gourmand, a combination he likes. Flirts with 14% and stays on side. Super ripe cherries as part of the nose, kicks on really well on the palate with this high acidity which brings out the red fruit notes in fruit which otherwise wants to be richer. Long finish, and in the end the balance works well. Will need time. Tasted: December 2021Inc. VAT£97.46 -

5 Star Wine. Going to be bottled tomorrow. A beautiful lively purple. The nose is exquisite, in a fresh dark raspberry style, very intense, with a sweetness to the fruit spreading across the palate. Perfectly poised, juicy, yet with a classical structure suggestive of a higher appellation. Drink from 2025-2029. Tasted: December 2023.Inc. VAT£257.09 -

Aromas of cherries, spices and rich soil tones introduce the 2019 Bourgogne Côte d'Or Pinot Noir, a medium-bodied, supple and charming wine that's lively and expressive, with succulent acids and a pretty core of fragrant fruit. (mostly from Pr meaux vines). Ripe aromas of various dark berries, warm earth and a whiff of the sauvage lead to attractively textured and rich flavors that possess fine mid-palate density, all wrapped in a rustic and robust finish that offers better than average complexity for a wine at this level. An overtly floral and markedly spicy nose is quite restrained if exceptionally pretty with its cool array of red and blue pinot fruit scents laced with hints of orange peel and herbal tea. Here too the middleweight flavors possess a lovely texture as well as a subtle minerality that adds a sense of lift to the well-delineated, balanced and dusty finish that is sneaky long. Mid purple. A softer richer dark fruit bouquet after Feusselottes. There is a spicy, peppery finish here which I didn’t expect, alongside the dark blackberry finish. Is it a type of minerality showing? Something to do with a little extra ripeness here? Intriguing. Drink from 2030-2036. Tasted Nov 2024.Inc. VAT£701.20 -

The 2017 Chambolle-Musigny Les Feusselottes 1er Cru (a vineyard where Jean-Nicolas Méo controls everything during the growing season) has a fresh, quite minerally bouquet that shows plenty of vigor. These vines were under a fermage agreement with the M o-Camuzet n gociant arm for almost 20 years. Alas, they were taken back in 2021. So, this is the last bottling of this wine. It's a shame, because it is thoroughly charming with the dignified lightness that Chambolle often brings along with heady perfume. Here are aromas of mulberries, cherry preserves, dried flowers and cocoa bordered by fluffy tannins and suave acidity. 2022-30Inc. VAT£937.92 -

A blend from two plots with different characters, and it seems to be working well. A bright even purple of medium density. The nose is more forthcoming than Cras.
