Méo-Camuzet
About Domaine Méo-Camuzet
Domaine Méo-Camuzet is one of Burgundy’s big names. Until 1988 most of the holdings were leased out. Now Jean-Nicolas Méo and Christian Faurois are making some of Cote d’Or’s best wine. Using organic farming on their great plots; they boast four Grand Cru and ten Premier Cru sites in Nuits St George and Vosne-Romanée.
Today, the fortunes of this magical Domaine and its standing as a winemaking entity could not be further removed from this period which, quite shockingly, actually saw a sizable share of its fruit sold to négociants! The proud master of over 2.5 hectares of Grands Crus and 8 of 1er, some of the most hallowed terroir in Nuits-St-Georges and Vosne-Romanée is owned and its fruit vinified by Méo-Camuzet.
Prior to the arrival of current stewards Jean-Nicholas Méo and Christian Faurois, two of the most monumental Burgundian personalities were fundamental in the history of Méo-Camuzet. The first being its namesake Etienne Camuzet, an important political figure in the early 20th century who, aside from purchasing the bulk of what we know as Domaine Méo-Camuzet holdings today including Château de Clos de Vougeot (later gifted to the Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin), made numerous important decisions throughout the region with regards to what parcels could be included in Grand Cru classification.
The second, and quite possibly the single greatest Burgundian winemaker of the 20th century, was Henri Jayer. Specifically invited by the owners of Domaine Méo-Camuzet to tend to their vines since the 1940s due to his already formidable reputation, the masterful vigneron remained a sharecropper of the Domaine’s holdings until 1988 when it moved to vinify its plots itself. Following the transformation of Domaine Méo-Camuzet into an almighty winemaking presence in its own right, Jayer remained a consultant and was utterly instrumental in its ascension to the very pinnacle of Burgundian fine wine.

(6x75cl) 2023Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90-92)
Domaine fruit from Bas de Combe, plus purchased Grandes Vignes. Ruby purple in colour, picked at a more ideal ripeness than the Marsannay. Plenty of energy here in a rich red fruit with just a suggestion of blacker berries, yet with good acidity. Some plums to finish. Drink from 2029-2034. Tasted Nov 2024.Expected Price Range£313 - £382 -
(6x75cl) 2018Vinous (85-87)
The 2018 Marsannay Village is a cru that Jean-Nicolas Méo told me he is considering returning under the domaine since he is finding it difficult to find good sources. It has a pleasant bouquet of cassis and blueberry fruit, nicely defined and floral in style. The palate is quintessential Marsannay with quite sturdy tannins and plenty of blue fruit, although I would like to see more delineation toward the finish.Inc. VAT£391.61 -
(6x75cl) 2021Vinous (86-88)
The 2021 Marsannay Village, which comes from a single parcel, has a crisp, quite stony, almost terse bouquet and only reluctantly opens up in the glass. The palate is balanced with a sapid entry, touches of blue fruit and a steely finish.Inc. VAT£477.59 -
(6x75cl) 2020Vinous (89-91)
The 2020 Nuits Saint-Georges 1er Cru comes from two vineyards, La Perrière and Terre Blanches, the former affected by hail in August. It has a relatively simple bouquet, though it seems fresh and focused. The palate is lighter in style, quite elegant, nicely poised if just missing a little substance on the finish.Inc. The 2021 Nuits Saint-Georges 1er Cru, which comes from Les Hauts Pruliers (this is unlikely to be mentioned on the label). Healthy deep red. Very pure aromas of crushed dark berries, minerals and bitter chocolate. Juicy, tight and penetrating, conveying terrific energy and cut to its flavors of dark berries, licorice and herbs. Quite backward today, even austere, but built to age. Jean-Nicolas Méo does not normally vinify with stems but he made this wine with 10% whole clusters.Inc. VAT£1,380.80 -
(3x150cl) 2015Vinous (94)
Healthy dark red. Pure but reticent aromas of black cherry, dark chocolate and violet. Intensely flavored and sharply delineated, displaying terrific energy to its sappy flavors of blackberry, licorice and violet. Conveys an impression of strong acidity for the year, which the inclusion of some of the stems no doubt amplifies. Beautifully balanced Nuits-Saint-Georges with a firm tannic spine and lingering salty minerality. I'm not sure I would have identified this wine as a 2015.Inc. VAT£2,345.52 -
Vinous (91-93)
The 2019 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Boudots 1er Cru needed a lot of aeration before it finally graced me with its presence. There is no stem addition in this vintage as there has been in previous years. It has a very well-defined bouquet even though it feels "aloof" at the moment, presenting sous-bois-infused black fruit and traces of iodine. The palate is well balanced with a slightly lactic, licorice-tinged entry. A precocious Les Boudots in the making. There is firm structure, good grip and a countervailing sorbet-like zip on the finish. This has all the components of a very fine Nuits Saint-Georges, but it will require cellaring.Inc. VAT£1,225.46 -

The 2020 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Boudots 1er Cru has a very expressive bouquet with ebullient red and blue fruit combined with violet and crushed stone scents. Dark purple black, full of energy, almost too much, the fruit is pretty ripe as well, some black cherry notes, balanced on the palate, some coffee to finish. Wouldn’t want it to be any riper. Always a lower acid site. 13.3% but the aromatics show that it needed to be picked. Tasted: December 2021.Inc. VAT£1,481.28 -
Decanter (95)
Méo's Boudots is striking in its purity of fruit, with pure mulberry aromas and peony, smoke, and earth notes. The texture is silky, yet there is also impressive density and length. The grapes come from a parcel of just over a hectare at the base of the slope. This delicious wine is a model of elegance and finesse that demonstrates the virtues of the Vosne side of the village. Méo relates that he has revolutionized his barrel regime and that almost everything is aged in light toast casks.Inc. VAT£1,288.32 -

The 1991 Nuits Saint-Georges Aux Murgers 1er Cru is fully mature on the nose with brambly red berry fruit, undergrowth, and hints of citrus peel and yuzu in the background that lend plenty of vim. The palate is medium-bodied with a soft entry. More like a 1990 in some ways, but there is fine grip, a little dryness creeping in on the back palate with tobacco notes gathering pace towards the finish. This is certainly commendable given its age. Tasted at the Méo-Camuzet dinner at Arbor in Hong Kong.Inc. VAT£709.73 -
Vinous (90-93)
Bright, dark red. Slightly reduced aromas of cherry, iron, red licorice and dried flowers. Sappy and sweet on the palate, and much easier to taste today than the Vosne-Romanée Les Chaumes despite its solid underlying structure. Finishes savory and lightly saline, with noteworthy subtle length.Inc. VAT£1,522.32 -
Vinous (91-93)
(14% alcohol!): Dark red with ruby tones. Deep, musky scents of black raspberry, smoke and game; very ripe but reserved. More than enough stuffing here to support the ripe tannins.Inc. VAT£217.73 -

The 2018 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Aux Murgers is showing especially well, unwinding in the glass with notes of sweet wild berries, plums, sweet soil tones and smoked meats. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, textural and concentrated, with lively acids, ripe tannins and a long, penetrating finish. Like many of Méo's 2018s, I suspect it will offer a broad drinking window.Inc. VAT£1,007.52 -

Pick up some 2020 while you can as 11 barrels were made. In 2021, only four were made. This will need a few years to come around with its slightly drying tannins, but otherwise, this is almost ready to enjoy. The mid-palate feels satiny and tastes of black cherries and licorice. The whole package is lifted by well-placed acidity that dances across the back palate. 2024-30Inc. VAT£767.28 -

(Sweet Spot Outstanding) Moderate reduction with some wood influence blurs the underlying fruit today. Otherwise, the ripe, suave, round and powerful broad-shouldered flavors exude a fine minerality on the muscular, mouth coating and wonderfully persistent finish that is both dusty and moderately austere. While this should be reasonably approachable after 7 to 8 years, it should also be capable of repaying 12+ years of cellaring.Inc. VAT£1,061.29 -

(from a .73 ha parcel of 40+ year old vines). A deft application of wood sets off the markedly ripe yet still nicely fresh nose of poached plum, black cherry liqueur and warm earth. As one would reasonably expect, there is better volume and density to the more powerful medium-bodied flavors that are at once rich and caressing before terminating in a palate soaking, very firm and sneaky long finish. Lovely and a wine that should be approachable after only 5-ish years yet easily reward a decade plus of cellaringInc. VAT£1,207.92 -
