Miguel Torres
Miguel had the foresight to identify not only Chile's excellent soils, climates and terroirs, but also to see how significant a difference European winemaking techniques could make to the quality of wines being made there. The rest, as they say, is history. Fermentation in stainless steel tanks was seen for the first time ever in Chile, as well as aging in French oak barrels. It is hard to think of another producer anywhere in the world who oversaw such rapid, radical change to winemaking in its country, thus altering the course of Chilean wine forever.
It is therefore unsurprising that such a forward-thinking man would not be content to keep releasing wines from the land he had originally purchased upon arrival in Chile. Just as soon as Miguel Torres had revolutionised the technical aspect of winemaking in South America, he set out to find a site which would allow his team to cultivate the very finest expression of "the heartbreak grape", Pinot Noir.
