    Olivier Bernstein

Born in Touraine to a family well-known in the music industry, Olivier Bernstein developed his boutique operation in Burgundy relatively late in life after studying oenology in beaune and a brief stint working under the late Henri Jayer. Bernstein has eschewed the traditional norm of filling his range out with Bourgogne and village-level wines, instead focussing his efforts on an all-star line-up of 1er and Grand Cru wines from Gevrey-Chamertin and Chambolle-Musigny.

    2014

    Olivier Bernstein Chambertin-Clos-de-Beze Grand Cru 2014 (6x75cl)

    Jancis Robinson (18+)

Bright, dark crimson. Lighter nose than the Mazis. Edgy wine. Not as massive as some other vintages. Almost fine. Muscular and set for the long term but the strength seems to come more by the promise of prolonged exercises than by sheer weight.

    Vinous (94-97)

Dark red-ruby. Knockout nose combines raspberry, cherry, game and saline underbrush, plus a whiff of torrefaction. At once fully ripe and delicate; in a distinctly more feminine style than the Mazis. The plush, rich yet elegant flavors of medicinal dark fruits, spices and exotic flowers are complicated by salty minerality. Less sweet in the early going than the Mazis, finishing precise, classic and extremely long, with serious but fully buffered tannins that melt into the palate.

Cassis and blackberries are overlaid with a cloak of sweet chocolate and toast. Forest floor and truffle enter the mix on the palate along with blood orange, boysenberry and Marasca cherry. The concentration and fierce intensity are almost Cabernet-like; this is a very big Pinot Noir. It is nicely held up by tingly acidity and lightly coarse tannin. 2026-38

Olivier has said before that he feels this Grand Cru is underestimated, and he's not alone in Burgundy. The juxtaposition of concentration and freshness is tremendous. There's a swath of glycerol across the palate that adds smoothness and toothsomeness while the crackling acidity gives the full body a much lighter impression. For now, this is the cuv e that best wears its generous new oak coat, letting the mulberry and plum flavors come to the fore. 2025-40

Impressively well integrated at such a young stage, the structure is composed of lightly leathery tannins gently pressuring the full-bodied core. The aromatics are exotic with spices, rustic forest floor, bramble and toasty oak. There's just the right amount of fruit density to compete with the toasty oak. These grapes come from approximately 70-year-old vines. 2025-35

    2012

    Olivier Bernstein Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cazetiers 2012 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (92-95)

Bernstein's 2012 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Cazetiers is seriously rich, powerful and concentrated, with a core of intense fruit that is going to need time to fully blossom. Still, there is a purity to the Cazetiers that is impossible to miss. Sweet floral and spice notes flesh out on the voluptuous, textured finish. The Cazetiers is distinguished for its superb density and structure.

    Stephen Tanzer - Vinous (91-93)

Bright, dark red. Red raspberry and exotic spice aromas are accented by a peppery stem element. Juicier and tighter than the Chambolle Les Lavrottes, showing a more restrained sweetness owing to its pungent spice and herb qualities. But this very long, vibrant wine finishes with a touch of underbrush and superb rising perfume. Incidentally, Bernstein owns these vines, as well as those from which he makes his Mazis-Chambertin.

Part owned by Olivier Bernstein, this 0.42ha parcel has yielded one of his best wines in 2017. The new wood, as ever, is quite assertive, but there's a lot of wine beneath its surface. Focussed, layered and complex, this has plum, raspberry and blueberry fruit with notes of incense and Asian spices.

Oak scents kick off the nose followed by black olives, lavender, cinnamon stick and a touch of vanilla. The muscular palate brings along blackberries and sweet black figs. There is a puff pastry-like layering of intriguing flavors, making this one of the more open wines at this point. However, with its mind-bending concentration, this is easily a wine that could close down after bottling. In general, Chef de Cave Richard S guin said, "You have to pamper this wine." 2026-40

    Olivier Bernstein Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2020 (1x300cl)

    Tim Atkin MW (94)

This has a bold, brooding nose for a Charmes. Mulberries, bramble and cherry preserves saturate the palate, and the new oak spice is suavely integrated. The acidic tang on the long finish gives this a good spark of energy. Early on, this is a choice Charmes for those who otherwise tend to favour Chambertin or Mazoy res. 2024-35

    Olivier Bernstein Clos-de-la-Roche Grand Cru 2020 (1x150cl)

    Tim Atkin MW (96)

Olivier has said before that he feels this Grand Cru is underestimated, and he's not alone in Burgundy. The juxtaposition of concentration and freshness is tremendous. There's a swath of glycerol across the palate that adds smoothness and toothsomeness while the crackling acidity gives the full body a much lighter impression. For now, this is the cuv e that best wears its generous new oak coat, letting the mulberry and plum flavors come to the fore. 2025-40

    Tim Atkin MW (96)

Impressively well integrated at such a young stage, the structure is composed of lightly leathery tannins gently pressuring the full-bodied core. The aromatics are exotic with spices, rustic forest floor, bramble and toasty oak. There's just the right amount of fruit density to compete with the toasty oak. These grapes come from approximately 70-year-old vines. 2025-35

    Olivier Bernstein Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Champeaux 2015 (6x75cl)

    Stephen Tanzer - Vinous (91-93)

Bright, dark red. Red raspberry and exotic spice aromas are accented by a peppery stem element. Juicier and tighter than the Chambolle Les Lavrottes, showing a more restrained sweetness owing to its pungent spice and herb qualities. But this very long, vibrant wine finishes with a touch of underbrush and superb rising perfume. Incidentally, Bernstein owns these vines, as well as those from which he makes his Mazis-Chambertin.

    Decanter (96)
