A true hidden gem is something of a rarity in a region subject to so much attention, but we believe Philipponnat has been consistently overlooked by the market in favour of other names in Champagne.
Boasting a heritage spanning almost 500 years, the Philipponnat family has been cultivating vines in the region of Aÿ as early as 1522 and count the Court of Louis XIV, Magistrates and Royal Mayors of Aÿ as its loyal patrons amongst many others.

To celebrate the unbelievable milestone of half a millennium crafting some of the world’s most exceptional sparkling wines, the legendary Maison have released a highly exclusive collectors’ case of which a mere 500 were made.
 Containing two different vintages of the Cuvée 1522, itself commemorating the foundation of Philipponnat, this wine is always composed of strictly Grand Cru fruit with the majority fermented in oak casks with no malolactic fermentation to provide rounded richness with total weightlessness.
 The village of Aÿ, home to the Philipponnat family for 16 generations, is clearly visible in the stunning label of Cuvée 1522. A testament to both terroir and vintage, the particular examples in this collection are the even rarer L.V. or Long Vieillissement (Long Aging) expressions kept back at the winery for added time on lees and extra maturity in perfect conditions.
 A bottle each of the 2000 and 2002, both exceptional vintages, are included in this beautiful case and are sure to be incredible wines neither of which are available to purchase individually on the market.

Disgorged in September 2018 with 4.5 grams per liter dosage, the 2008 Extra Brut Grand Blanc is composed of vins clairs matured in barrel with blocked malolactic and vins clairs matured in tank that were allowed to complete malolactic. A wonderfully complete wine, the 1980 Clos des Goisses has it all. Here the Pinot is quite expressive in both the wine's flavor profile and weight. Rich, powerful and vinous, the 1980 is also a great example of how Goisses ages. I have always been partial to this vintage, as 1980 was the first Clos des Goisses I tasted. Today, many years later, it's great to see the wine is still in great shape. Very rich and palate-coating, offering sweet orchard and pit fruit flavors and complicating notes of bitter citrus pith and smoky minerals. Quite open, with sexy floral and spice qualities on the long, sweet, nutty finish. Clos des Goisses is one of the most rewarding wines to drink when mature, and I have no doubt this will be another splendid version. This refined, sumptuous wine is not to be missed. This is a wine that I have followed since its release and like a number of 2007s, it took its sweet time to add depth and flesh out as it was exceptionally tightly wound, austere and seemingly just effervescence and citrus-tinged wine. Time however has worked its magic and this is much, indeed much, much more interesting than it was with elegant, airy and pure aromas of green apple, soft yeast, plenty of citrus and a Chablis-like shellfish and iodine hint. The racy and still almost painfully intense middle weight flavors are crisp, bone-dry and palate etching as the mousse is firm but fine, all wrapped in a mildly austere and wonderfully long finish. This exceptionally stylish effort could be enjoyed now or held for another 3 to 5 years first. Excellent and a classic vintage for Clos des Goisses.
