Pichon Baron

Château Pichon-Longueville Baron is a 2eme Grand Cru Classé estate in Pauillac on Bordeaux’s Left Bank. The estate – and its sister Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande – was effectively created in 1850 when Baron Joseph de Pichon Longueville divided a larger property comprising both estates between his five children. Pichon Baron didn’t perform to the standard of its terroir in the 1960s and 1970s. But this all changed with its acquisition by the AXA Group and the arrival of Jean-Michel Cazes of Lynch Bages to run things properly. Huge investment and re-planting occurred and when Cazes handed over to Christian Seely in 2000 the estate was already on a march back to greatness. Seely has presided over a remarkable renaissance at Pichon Baron, and today the wines are hugely admired and collected as amongst the most rich, full bodied, spicy, concentrated, tannic and elegant of red Bordeaux. The 73 hectare vineyard consists of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot – although the Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot are reserved exclusively for the second wine. The 40 hectares used for the Grand Vin are located on the plateau of Pauillac, which borders the vineyard of Château Pichon Lalande and overlooks the vines of Château Latour.
