    Pieropan

True pioneers of the Soave region, the Pieropan family introduced the concept of single vineyard wines long before it became de rigeur – the La Rocca cuvee was one of the first single vineyard wines in Italy when it was created in 1977. Their Soave Classicos are grown on hillside plots of volcanic soils. They recognise the intrinsic potential of Garganega, planted here since Roman times, which retains its acidity when the grapes are ripe and expresses terroir wonderfully.

    James Suckling (94)

The first single-vineyard created here, in the late 18th century. More black soil than in the Soave Classico. This is very good, meshing the inherent ripeness of the vintage with a mineral-infused pungency. Green apples, quince and stone fruit. Yet the feel is linear, cool and taut, with a growing trajectory of fruit sweetness across the long, energetic finish. A pithy exclamation to close. Drink or hold.

    James Suckling (95)

Aromas of chamomile, dried pineapple, preserved lemon, toasted almond and beeswax. It’s medium-to full-bodied with tangy acidity. So concentrated, layered and phenolic. Keeps going. Yet, it remains agile and vivid. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

    Jancis Robinson (18)

Intense, concentrated, tense flavours of dried citrus peel, fermented honey and almost piercing acidity. Dry finish. Real grip. Already hugely impressive but surely this will just go on and on acquiring extra layers. Extraordinarily persistent. The flavour lingers for a minute or even two. Glorious! (JR)

    James Suckling (96)

The only oak-inflected cuvee at the estate. Aged in 100% used tonneaux, both French and Slavonian. Superb aromas of pistachios, peaches and dried mangoes. Broad and expansive, yet funneled into a vortex of tension by freshness that sublimates any sense of obvious power. A wonderful expression of a warmer vintage that suits perfectly this compelling site. Drink or hold.
