    Poggio Antico

    About Poggio Antico

Found in the heartland of Montalcino, Poggio Antico is uniquely located on a rocky promontory, enjoying a splendid south-westerly view. Although viticulture started only in 1984, this winery progressed rapidly in quality. Now standing toe-to-toe to prominent names such as Altesino and Valdicava, Poggio Antico crafts classical Sangiovese, eagerly sought-after by oenophiles in the world.

The upward trajectory of this winery has been particularly evident since the second generation, Paola Gloder, took over the business and subsequently the sale to Belgium investors in 2017. Having introduced radical renovations in the cellar and converting the vineyard to fully organic, the wine quality, naturally, goes from strength to strength. In the latest vintage, the winemaking team even replaced the use of oak with more cement and steel vats. This is done to pursue smaller batch vinification and thus improve wine precision and site intensity.

Poggio Antico Brunello di Montalcino 2015 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (94.5)

Bright red with a pale rim. Captivating aromas of ripe red fruits, blueberry nectar, marzipan and Oriental spices. Boasts outstanding inner-mouth perfume and precise flavors of ripe red cherry, redcurrant jelly, potpourri and minerals. Finishes long and seamless. This is one of the best non-single vineyard Brunellos of the vintage and one of the better wines from Poggio Antico in some time.

Poggio Antico Brunello di Montalcino 2016 (1x150cl)

    Wine Advocate (95+)

The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino offers a pure and classic expression of the vintage with bright fruit tones, wild cherry, toasted nut, blue flower and forest floor. Whereas the other wines in the Poggio Antico portfolio undergo aging in smaller tonneaux, this wine is aged in large Slavonian casks instead. You taste the lift and brightness of the fruit, and it's all quite lovely. Grapes are sourced across a 13-hectare site at a very high 500 meters in elevation. The name of this area is I Poggi, and the soils here are a bit lighter and rockier with both schistous galestro and limestone alberese. I love the delicate approach here, the intensity of those floral aromas, and the silky nature of the mouthfeel. Some 34,000 bottles will be released in January 2021. This classic Brunello really stands out.

Poggio Antico Brunello di Montalcino Altero 2015 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (91.5)

Dark red with a large pale rim. Big, brooding wine that offers much darker color, aromas and flavors than Poggio Antico’s 2015 Brunello classico. But bigger is not necessarily better, and I find that the cedary, flinty, herbal nuances to the red and blue fruits neither have much verve nor they represent my ideal Sangiovese wine. Will likely improve with cellaring, but for the money, I’d rather buy Poggio Antico’s regular 2015 Brunello.

Poggio Antico Brunello di Montalcino Altero 2016 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (89)

The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Altero from Poggio Antico is an unapologetically fruit-forward and oak-influenced effort. Crushed blackberries, currants, plums and balsamic spices find lift through mentholated herbal tones. It’s medium-bodied and velvety in texture, with stimulating acids to contrast its weight, showing ripe red/black fruits offset by sour citrus. The palate aches with youthful tension throughout the cheek-puckering finale, leaving hints of cedar and tobacco. A short stay in the cellar may help add a little more balance here, but the 2016 Altero simply seems to be a little too big for its own good.

Fresh and juicy, with fine harmony and an exceptional aftertaste that echoes the fruit and mineral elements. Its solid structure gives this fine aging potential.
