    Poggio Scalette

Vittorio Fiore purchased the vineyards of Poggio Scalette in 1991 on the hill of Ruffoli near Greve in Chianti, declaring them to be "heaven on earth for Sangiovese." After tasting their wines, it is hard not to agree with them.

    2017

Poggio Scalette Chianti Classico 2017 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (88)

Poggio Scalette's 2017 Chianti Classico is forward and juicy, as so many wines are in this vintage. Sweet red cherry, tobacco, spice and leather shape this racy, pliant Chianti Classico from Poggio Scalette. The 2017 is not terribly complex, but it is quite tasty.

    2018

Poggio Scalette Chianti Classico 2018 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (89)

The 2018 Chianti Classico is a very pretty wine, not complex or super-structured, but a real delight to taste. Bright red Sangiovese fruit and sweet floral notes are front and center. Time in the glass brings out a range of cedar, leather and tobacco notes. More than anything else, the 2018 is a wine to enjoy for its fruit goodness.

    2012

Poggio Scalette Il Carbonaione 2012 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (95)

The 2012 Il Carbonaione comes across as quite shy and reserved today, with less of its typical exuberance. That just makes me think the wine is going to need a few years to blossom. Sweet red cherry, plum, kirsch, spice and rose petal nuances gradually emerge from the glass, but the 2012 remains reticent and not fully expressive. I would not be surprised to see the market look past the 2012, as it is not at all showy, but that will just create an opportunity for savvy consumers. There is plenty to look forward to. Readers will have to be patient, though. Over the years, Il Carbonaione has built a tremendous track record of aging very well. Next to Chianti Classico's other 100% Sangioveses, Carbonaione is made in a sweeter, jammier style with more mid-palate opulence. Although showy in its youth, Carbonaione needs time in bottle to show at its best.

Poggio Scalette Il Carbonaione 2013 (6x75cl)

    James Suckling (97)

Wow. The mouthfeel, depth and length to this red is really phenomenal. Full body, ultra-fine tannins. Blueberry, blackberry and chocolate character. Goes on for minutes. The composure and substance to this wine is amazing. This is the best ever Il Carbonaione. Will improve for years but taste it now.

    2014

Poggio Scalette Il Carbonaione 2014 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (95+)

The 2014 Il Carbonaione is one of the truly exceptional wines of this challenging season. Lithe and aromatic on the palate, with fabulous energy and overall brightness, it stands out for its superb balance. In many vintages, Il Carbonaione can be a bit bombastic. The 2014, on the other hand, is all finesse. Violet, lavender and cloves add shades of nuance to this bright, beautifully persistent Carbonaione. The 2014 won't be at its best for at least a few years, but its potential is evident.

A really exotic nose with so much dried herb character, ranging from thyme and sage to Thai basil. Then there’s more familiar and equally appealing dark blackcurrants, crushed stones and lavender. Full body with very refined tannins that both coat and caress the palate. A long, chewy finish. Drink in 2022.

    James Suckling (97)

What a crazy nose of pure fruit, featuring pressed violets, lavender, dark plums, cherry compote, orange rind, lemon zest, boysenberries, vanilla, Thai basil and bay leaf. The fruit is so overt and generous, yet presented in an unimaginably sleek way, the firm tannins keeping it compact and silky throughout, while the tangy acidity cuts right through to the long, structured finish. Drink in 2023.

Intense aromas of blue fruit, lavender and violets. Some sandalwood, too. Full-bodied with firm, silky tannins and beautiful fruit. Really racy and refined with excellent length. Drinkable now, but a few years of bottle age will make it even more beautiful. Try after 2023.
