    Quintessa

Hailed as a “magnificent estate in Rutherford” by Robert M. Parker Jr., Quintessa is one of Napa Valley’s finest Bordeaux Blends that flies below the radar screen outside the USA. Located in the heart of Rutherford AVA, Quintessa has the region’s finest collections of vineyards that sit at the foot of the Vaca Mountain Range with a variety of soils and microclimates. French legend Michel Rolland has been the consultant of the winery since 2000.

The vines of Quintessa are planted on virgin soil that has never been exploited until the late 1980s. Free from any contamination, the soil is healthy without blemish. The name “Quintessa” means the 5 elements, and ‘harmony with nature’ is the focus of the wine-making here. They began farming organically in 1990, and then biodynamically in 1996.

    Quintessa 2016 (6x75cl)

    James Suckling (98)

Phenomenal aromas of crushed berries, forest fruit, mushrooms and iron. Medium to full body, with layers of soft and refined tannins that follow through to a beautiful finish. Extremely long and refined. This shows depth and structure with balance and harmony. Hard not to open the bottle now and drink it, but it appears to be closing down now. Needs four to five years to show it all.

    Quintessa 2018 (6x75cl)

    James Suckling (99)

This is beautifully polished with firm, dusty tannins to the blue fruit, as well as chocolate and cedar character. Some much earthier character, too, from mushrooms to bark. Forest flowers. Perfumed. It’s full-bodied with round tannins and a soft, creamy finish. Some iron and iodine to this. So attractive at the finish. From biodynamically grown grapes. Better after 2023.
