    Château Rauzan-Ségla

    About Château Rauzan-Ségla

Château Rauzan-Ségla and Mouton-Rothschild were considered the two leading Second Growths of the 19th Century. Whilst Mouton's ascension has become the stuff of legend as the only property to achieve an alteration to the 1855 classification, Rauzan-Ségla dwindled dreadfully due to a succession of almost inexplicably disappointing wines.

In truth, its Renaissance began some time before the introduction of the Chanel Group propelled the estate into the stratosphere. Rauzan-Ségla's initial sale in the early 1980s saw the eminent Professor Peynaud appointed as the consultant, who increased both proportions of Cabernet Sauvignon and new oak into the wines. In 1986 an entirely new winery was built.

Increasing quality, vintage after vintage, obviously did not go unnoticed by the vinous titan that is the Chanel Group, and they acquired the historic in 1994. Today, Château Rauzan-Ségla is one of a trio of Bordeaux estates owned by the fashion house Chanel, along with Château Canon and Chateau Berliquet. Rauzan-Ségla is a Margaux 2éme Grand Cru Classé (“Second Growth”) estate. The Wertheimer brothers (owners of Chanel) has invested brilliantly which has paid dividends aplenty.

    The Vineyard and The Winemaking

The new owners began a vast investment programme. Alongside hiring Peter Marino to restore the historic château, they have replaced concrete vats with smaller vessels for precise vinification and also implemented a sweeping replanting program that is still under way after nearly 30 years of acquisition.

The newer plantings feature more Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and the addition of Petit Verdot. Today, the vineyard comprises 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot. While much of their vines are on the Cantenac plateau, they also have vines close to Margaux's village. Slightly more than half their vineyard is well placed, directly adjacent to the château. They also have vines close to Chateau Margaux and not far from Brane Cantenac.

    Rauzan-Segla 1962 (2x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (75)

This is an uncharacteristic wine for the 1962 vintage that produced so many elegant, charming, round, fruity wines. Hard, lean, and austere, without much richness or charm, this wine's fruit has no chance of ever outdistancing the considerable tannins that are still present. Anticipated maturity: Now-probably in serious decline. Last tasted, 2/78.

    Rauzan-Segla 1989 (12x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (90)

At first disjointed and a bit diffuse, the 1989 Rauzan-Segla has turned itself around in bottle and is now an outstanding effort. The very forward nose of black fruits intermixed with Provencal herbs, underbrush, licorice, and new oak is followed by a medium to full-bodied wine with a roasted ripeness, silky tannins, and a long, lusty finish. The wine is showing exceptionally well and seems destined to drink, at least at this level of quality, for another decade. Anticipated maturity: Now-2012. Last tasted, 3/02.

A wine that could easily be mistaken for a First Growth, the 2010 Rauzan-Ségla is an incredibly powerful, full-bodied wine by this estate’s standards, yet it nevertheless holds onto a terrific sense of elegance as well as perfect balance. A huge nose of blackcurrants, smoked earth, tobacco, lead pencil, and spice give way to a concentrated, blockbuster styled Margaux that has thrilling depth of fruit, masses of ripe tannins, and great length and finesse on the finish. This brilliant wine is just now seemingly on the edge of its drink window and offers immense pleasure, yet it has another 30-40 years of life ahead of it. Along with the 2015 and 2016, it’s the greatest wine made at this estate in the past two decades.

    Rauzan-Segla 2012 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (94+)

The 2012 Rauzan-Ségla (54.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 44% Merlot and 1.5% Petit Verdot) is a classic Rauzan-Ségla, still relatively backward and tannic, but concentrated and extremely promising. Dense blueberry, blackberry and cassis fruit along with some licorice, vanilla, foresty notes and spice are all present in this full-bodied yet structured and big, beefy style of Rauzan-Ségla . It may turn out to be somewhat atypical for this château in its size and masculine structure, but this is impressive wine, and one of the great successes of the vintage. Give it 5-7 years of bottle age and drink it over the following three decades.

Fantastic aromas of blackberries, blackcurrants and strawberries follow through to a full body, super-integrated tannins and an extremely long finish. The bright acidity gives the wine a linear edge that focuses in all the fruit. Minerally. Drink in 2021.

I underrated the 2015 Rauzan-Ségla on release. It’s a big, rich, incredibly sexy wine that’s certainly in the same ballpark as the 2016 (and 2018). Full-bodied, ripe, and concentrated, it has a wonderfully expansive, layered texture as well as an incredible sense of balance. Lots of cassis, leafy herbs, flowery incense, and tobacco notes all emerge from this beauty, which offers sweet tannins as well as a huge finish. This is magical stuff that’s going to keep for three decades or more.

Reminding me of the 2016, the 2018 Château Rauzan-Segla reveals this beautifully fresh, complex bouquet that still has serious richness and depth. Based on 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, raised in 65% new barrels, it offers a dense purple hue to go with gorgeous notes of blackcurrants, spring flowers, cigar wrapper, and sandalwood. A quintessential Margaux with its spicy, complex, floral character, it's full-bodied and has a supple, elegant texture, no hard edges, a solid spine of acidity, and a great, great finish. This is a brilliant, heavenly 2018 to enjoy over the coming 30 years or more.

    Vinous (NM) (97)

The 2019 Rauzan-Ségla is a wine that I did not taste en primeur. Picked from September 12 to October 9 and matured in 60% new oak, it has a gorgeous, seductive bouquet of pure blackberry, bilberry, crushed iris petals and just a hint of licorice. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins and good cohesion and depth. The oak is seamlessly integrated on the finish, which lingers like a temptress. Two samples tasted, the second demonstrating a little more salinity on the aftertaste. This will be irresistible.

Composed of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot and 1% Cabernet Franc, the 2020 Rauzan-Ségla is aging for 18 months in French oak barrels, 60% new. It has an alcohol of 13.5% and a pH of 3.74. Deep purple-black colored, aromas of blackcurrant cordial, stewed red and black plums, chocolate-covered cherries and raspberry coulis erupt from the glass, leading to an undercurrent of tar, licorice, red roses and menthol, plus a hint of unsmoked cigars. The medium-bodied palate is elegant and yet manages seriously impressive intensity, which is well-sustained throughout the mid-palate and finish. Refined and refreshing, delivering beautifully soft, silt-like tannins and bags of bright red and black fruits, it finishes with amazing length and a stunning perfume. Between this and Château Canon, Nicolas Audebert and his team have knocked it out of the park this vintage.

Rauzan-Ségla (Margaux; 75% Cabernet Sauvignon; 25% Merlot; 13% alcohol; a final yield of 38 hl/ha; aging in oak barrels, 60% of which are new; tasted at the property and at the UGCB press tasting; Eric Boissenot is the consultant). A tiny bit of Cabernet Franc was in fact co-vinified with the Cabernet Sauvignon. Mildew damage reduced the amount of Merlot here. This is intensely perfumed and extremely expressive aromatically with the parfumier’s essence of violets and wild hedgerow flowers, rose petals, graphite by the nuclear reactor core-load and a rich deep, dark, cool autumnal fruit. There are also tiny wild strawberries , blood orange, and that gorgeously tender cedar note one so associates with Rauzan-Ségla, dark roast coffee beans and grated dark chocolate. This feels very composed and natural, an object lesson in purity and precision. There is a lovely fleshy softness on the attack, with super-svelte tannins. The mid-palate seems both sinuous and yet linear, precise and focussed but with great concentration and perfect harmony. There’s also a superb natural sweetness. Gentle aeration brings more cassis notes into the mouth and a refreshing sapidity. Overall, there is great plenitude, considerable tension and class without opulence. And in 2021 the wine is more floral than ever. It continues its rich vein of form, with the chewy tannins and lift on the finish hinting at the potential longevity. All the Chanel estates are in their first full year of conversion to organic viticulture, making the final yield all the more impressive. Really superb.

    2021

    Rauzan-Segla 2021 (3x75cl)

    The Drinks Business (95-97)

    Wine Advocate (96-98+)
