    Rene Engel

Based in Vosne-Romanee, this producer is named for the vigneron who brought the family domaine and indeed much of Burgundy into the modern era. Rene Engel founded the Confrerie des Chevaliers du Tastevin and helped raise the profile of the region’ finest wines which had previously been surprisingly difficult to sell. No longer the case; Engel’s wines are among the most highly-prized in Burgundy.

    1993

    Rene Engel Clos-Vougeot Grand Cru 1993 (1x75cl)

    Vinous (88)

The 1993 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru from the late Philippe Engel is a disappointing bottle. The bouquet feels overtly high-toned and oaky, atypically for a 1993 that is usually the epitome of elegance. The palate is ripe and sweet: a core of red cherries and wild strawberry intermixed with orange sorbet and soy. There is plenty of energy extant on this Clos Vougeot but it lacks the breeding, the sophistication that I expected. I wonder if the late Philippe Engel picked this too late? Tasted at Carré des Feuillants restaurant in Paris.

    Rene Engel Clos-Vougeot Grand Cru 2002 (2x75cl)

    Vinous (96)

Another strong showing for the 2002 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru from the late Philippe Engel. The nose is ethereal, offering raspberry and crushed strawberry scents, and the palate is extraordinary in terms of focus. The finish oddly reminds me of Engel's Grands Echézeaux. Magnificent. Tasted at Noizé restaurant in London.

    1999

    Rene Engel Grands-Echezeaux Grand Cru 1999 (3x75cl)

    Vinous (93)

The 1999 Grands Echézeaux Grand Cru is consistent with the bottle that I tasted four years earlier. It has an intense, quite floral bouquet that displays more black fruit than I expect, a touch of black olive emerging with time. The palate is extremely well balanced, grippy and structured, though many not quite delivering the finesse of Engel's 2002s for example. There is sinew here, but it is far from what you would describe as a brawny wine. It finishes with layers of black cherry, wild strawberry, brown spices and a subtle pastille-like element. You could broach this now of course, but I am intrigued to see how it will age. Tasted at the 1243 Club in Beaune.
