Reyneke
About Reyneke
Johan Reyneke began his winemaking journey as a labourer in small vineyards owned by his neighbours in Stellenbosch. As the vineyards were too small to sustain a profitable business, Johan was allowed to take over the vineyards and, after combining with those owned by his parents, he started selling grapes to wineries and eventually progressed to making his own wines.
Right off the bat, he embraced organic and biodynamic farming practices, a move that has yielded handsome dividends. He was ahead of the curve, and he is now credited as the pioneer of the organic and biodynamic winemaking movement in South Africa. According to The Biodynamic and Organic Wines of South Africa, Reyneke is one out of only 2 South African producers who possess both organic and biodynamic certification today. Making elegant, classic wines, their Syrahs could pass for Cornas. Whatever wine Johann Reyneke makes, however, they come with an undeniably South African spirit; energy and life that is truly thrilling.

Vinous (96)The 2017 Cornerstone, matured in 30% new French oak for 18 months (the Merlot and Cabernet Franc aged in _foudre_) has an opulent bouquet of lavish dark cherry, cassis, blueberry and whole bunches of freshly picked violets. It would be overwhelming if not for its entrancing purity and pixelation. The palate is medium-bodied with a finely chiseled lattice of tannins, perfectly pitched acidity and wonderful _mineralité_ toward the finish. This is an outstanding wine from Johanne Reyneke and his team. |

The balanced palate is medium-bodied with very supple tannins, ripe but not overly sweet, and caressing toward the plush finish. Irresistible and quite cerebral. |

Graceful, granular and leafy, with caressing tannins, fine oak and bright plum and red berry flavours. |
