Rossignol-Trapet

Created through the marriage of Jacques Rossignol and Mado Trapet, since 1990 the estate has been managed by sons Nicolas and David who quickly moved it to biodynamic farming. Their technique of only racking when necessary produces wines that clearly express their excellent Gevrey-Chambertin vineyards.

Rossignol-Trapet Chambertin Grand Cru 2014 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (93)

Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2014 tasting, the 2014 Chambertin Grand Cru from Rossignol-Trapet has one of the most austere and backward bouquets among the septet of Chambertins. This demands coaxing and reluctantly offers blackberry, cranberry, smoke and damp undergrowth notes. But it is not as vivid as its peers. The palate is medium-bodied with a firm grip, a demonstrative Chambertin and yet unlike Armand Rousseau's Chambertin tasted alongside, it does not quite deliver the payload of complexity and intensity on the final third. It starts so well and then it leaves you wanting more. Tasted September 2017.

Rossignol-Trapet Chambertin Grand Cru 2016 (1x150cl)

Wine Advocate (93-95)

The 2016 Chambertin Grand Cru was impacted severely by the frost. Usually, the domaine produces around 22 or 23 barrels whereas this year...just four. Two of those are new barrels including two-thirds whole bunch fruit. Although it was affected by the frost, it successfully retains a wonderful, expressive bouquet laden with mineral-rich red berry fruit notwithstanding a captivating floral component that becomes more vociferous with aeration (like the Chapelle-Chambertin). The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, crisp and focused with dark berry fruit, sea salt (maybe brine?), brown spices and a detailed, quite long spicy aftertaste. It is a worthy follow-up to the 2015...just a shame there is relatively little compared to other vintages.

Rossignol-Trapet Chambertin Grand Cru 2018 (12x75cl)

Vinous (94-96)

The 2018 Chambertin Grand Cru comes from two parcels. The wonderful, extremely well-defined bouquet immediately expresses the aristocratic nature of this vineyard, offering red berry fruit, orange pith, crushed stone and wilted rose petal, and becoming more and more intense with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a fine bead of acidity and very impressive balance. There is a judicious spiciness to this grand cru. Structured on the finish, with a long, persistent aftertaste. Superb breeding here. Recommended, especially given the price of other Chambertins.

Rossignol-Trapet Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Prieur 2014 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (90)

Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2014 tasting, Rossignol-Trapet's 2014 Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Prieur has a vibrant bouquet with scents of cranberry, redcurrant and bergamot, very well defined and transparent. The palate is medium-bodied with fleshy, supple tannin. This feels elegant and nicely poised, although whether it has the substance and structure to be a long-term proposition is another matter. I would be inclined to drink this over the next 5-8 years. Tasted September 2017.

Rossignol-Trapet Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Petite Chapelle 2013 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (88)

Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Petite Chapelle has less fruit on the nose than the premier cru from J L Trapet tasted alongside. There seems to be a little stem addition underneath, with red cherries and cranberry leaf aromas, perhaps lean in style but still fresh and correct. The oak is not quite as well subsumed as others but maybe it just needs time. The palate is well balanced with fine tannin, red plum and cranberry notes to the fore with a soft landing on the easy going finish. This is a consumer-friendly Gevrey, one that is well-crafted. Tasted September 2016.

Rossignol-Trapet Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes 2017 (12x75cl)

Vinous (91-93)

The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes comes from 65-year old vines and matures in 15% new oak. This has a more flamboyant and extrovert bouquet than the Beaune Les Tuerons, though that is partly because it had just undergone the racking. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, a "gutsy" Gevrey with good substance and brims over with freshness on the finish. What a delicious, charming Gevrey from Rossignol-Trapet - this comes highly recommended.

Rossignol-Trapet Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes 2018 (6x75cl)

Vinous (89-91)

The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes comes from vines averaging 60 years of age, within nine parcels that are representative of the appellation. It has a lovely bouquet of undergrowth scents percolating through red berry fruit that is slightly darker than the Bourgogne Rouge, the 50% whole cluster nicely integrated. The lightly spiced palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a fine bead of acidity and an elegant finish that exerts gentle grip. Give it two or three years in bottle.
