Royal Tokaji
About Royal Tokaji
A mystery of a wine region, whose potential is only starting to be fully released again by the fine wine world, Tokaji is, in our belief, the best and most excting sweet wine region in the world.
The most instrumental producer in this miraculous resurgence is undoubtedly Royal Tokaji. Voted one of the World's Most Admired Wine Brands by Drinks International, it was founded by celebrated wine writer Hugh Johnson and was the first foreign company to invest in the historic region after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Today, they produce an amazing range of wines that make Sauternes quake in their boots.
From the outset, Royal Tokaji focused on producing single-vineyard wines made from the first-growth sites of Mezes Maly, Nyulaszo, Szt Tamas, and Betsek. These wines are in a league of their own and are highly coveted by collectors and enthusiasts alike. And these exceptional site productions are made only produced in exceptional years.

Wine Advocate (98)The 2003 Essencia has a fabulous bouquet with profound scents of lemon curd, frangipane, apple crumble, dandelion, wild mushroom and a slight adhesive note. The palate is extraordinarily pure with perfect acidity. It is perfectly focused with a crescendo of honey, quince, and Seville orange marmalade with lemon peel. This is out of this world. |

Vinous - Neal Martin (100)The 2007 Tokaji Essencia contains 560 g/l residual sugar with 10.1 g/l acidity, a total production of 2,057 bottles. I have tasted the 2007 once before, though that was several years ago. Clear amber in colour, it has a fabulous, showstopping nose with stewed apricots, mandarin, Anjou pears and marmalade all delivered with stunning delineation. The bouquet has not moved much in recent years. The palate is incredibly unctuous in texture and literally lacquers the mouth. It is intense and compelling with notes of Seville orange, yellow plum and a background spiciness. Boasting incredible purity and a length that has to be tasted to be believed, this vies with the 2009 as the greatest Essencia that the Royal Tokaji Company has ever made. |

Vinous (96)The 2018 Tokaji Gold Label 6-Puttonyos is a different beast to the 5-Puttonyos, as expected, laden with much more concentration and richness on the nose, with marmalade quince and a hint of melted candle wax. This is fairly powerful in style. The palate is beautifully balanced with a viscous entry, but there is much more complexity here, with superb tension and notes of marmalade, peach skin, fresh fig and orange pith. What marks this Tokaji out is that despite the residual sugar and concentration, it is nimble, light on its feet and doesn't pall after the first glass. Outstanding. (197.1g/l residual sugar and 6.75g/l acidity) |
