    Saint Prefert

Domaine Saint Prefert is a truly modern winery in a deeply traditional region. Approaching the building itself, one is immediately struck by the sheer avante-garde nature of the architecture. However the domaine itself is in no way a recent player on the stage in Chateauneuf-du-Pape. One of the first producers in the 1930s to make the leap out of the local market and into fine wine consciousness around the world.

Fast-froward to the present, under the guiding hand of Isabel Ferrando, Saint Prefert is one of the regions fastest rising stars and annually produces some very fine and long-lived wines indeed. Structured and elegant with many years ahead of it, the 2012 vintage was a great success at Saint Prefert, outperforming many of its more illustrious neighbours. This is a wine with easily another 10-15 years ahead of it and will reward careful cellaring.

    Saint Prefert Chateauneuf-du-Pape 2016 (6x75cl)

    Jeb Dunnuck (92-95)

Like with the 2015s, the 2016-barrel samples show a more streamlined, elegant style which is a direction the estate has been moving since 2010. The darkest colored of all three-barrel samples was the 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape and it’s a big, rich, burly effort that gives up lots of black and blue fruits, leather and peppery garrigue aromas and flavors. With full-bodied richness, a great mid-palate and plenty of chalky minerality, it's a seriously good traditional cuvée to drink over the coming decade or more.

    Jeb Dunnuck (95)

One of the whites of the vintage is the 2018 Châteauneuf Du Pape Blanc, a gorgeous, rich, layered effort that stays perfectly balanced and pure. Classic notes of white flowers, honeysuckle, white peach, and ample minerality all give way to a medium to full-bodied white that has loads of texture, good freshness, and a great finish. This is a brilliant Châteauneuf Du Pape Blanc that makes a mockery of so many of the overly lean, fresh, so called elegant whites being produced today.

Saint Prefert Chateauneuf-du-Pape Collection Charles Giraud 2014 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (92-94+)

Tasted from barrel, the 2014 Châteauneuf du Pape Collection Charles Giraud incorporates a splash of Syrah in 2014 and is a blend of 55% Grenache, 40% Mourvèdre and 5% Syrah. Aged 18 months in mostly two- to three-year-old barrels, it has lots of white pepper, cedary spice, plum and darker berry fruit on the nose. Medium to full-bodied, lively and fresh, yet with a rockin’ mid-palate and finish, it’s a terrific 2014 that will come together nicely with a year or two in bottle.

Saint Prefert Chateauneuf-du-Pape Collection Charles Giraud 2016 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (99)

The 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape Collection Charles Giraud is a 60-40 blend of Grenache and Mourvèdre, fermented with all the stems. There's a hint of cocoa, but raspberries and strawberries are the dominant fruit flavors in this lively, zesty wine. Trace notes of mint, lavender and tea leaf add complexity. Full-bodied and velvety in texture, it's intensely concentrated and rich yet not overly heavy or overripe (it weighs in at 15.5% alcohol), with a lingering, elegant finish. It's a tour de force that should age for two decades or more, and it will be interesting to see how it compares to the perfect 2010 after it's had a few years in bottle.

Saint Prefert Chateauneuf-du-Pape Collection Charles Giraud 2017 (6x75cl)

    Jeb Dunnuck (100)

Even better (as well as a perfect wine), the 2017 Châteauneuf Du Pape Collection Charles Giraud checks in as a nominal blend of 60% Grenache and 40% Mourvèdre that was brought up in demi-muids. It reveals a deep purple color as well as heavenly notes of blackberry and currant fruits intermixed with loads of cured meats, spice box, Asian spices, and a distinct loamy soil and minerality. Always more structured and powerful than the Reserve Auguste Favier release (no doubt due to the Mourvèdre component), it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, building yet polished tannins, flawless balance, and a great, great finish. Pure perfection in a glass, it’s as good as wine gets. Give bottles 2-4 years and enjoy over the following two decades. Hats off to winemaker Isabelle Ferrando for yet another thrilling wine!

Saint Prefert Chateauneuf-du-Pape Collection Charles Giraud 2019 (6x75cl)

    Jeb Dunnuck (99)

The 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Collection Charles Giraud includes a big chunk of Mourvèdre and is 60% Grenache and 40% Mourvèdre that was partially destemmed and brought up in demi-muids. If offers a deep ruby/plum color as well as a rich, savory, complex bouquet of black raspberries, cassis, toasted spice, cured meats, and graphite. The Mourvèdre really shows in this beauty, and it's full-bodied, concentrated, and structured, yet never loses its seamless, flawlessly balanced profile. It's going to need 4-5 years of bottle age but will have 20-25 years of ultimate longevity. It's another thrilling wine from this estate.

    Wine Advocate (97)

A blend of 85% Grenache and 15% Cinsault, the 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape Reserve Auguste Favier boasts enchanting floral aromas, intoxicating raspberry and cherry fruit and enthralling hints of Swiss cocoa. Full-bodied, rich and velvety, it nevertheless comes across as fresh and nearly weightless. The use of stems (the wine is all whole bunches) and an elevated proportion of Cinsault has certainly contributed to this wine's soaring aromas and sense of freshness. It's a fascinating wine.

Saturated ruby. Highly expressive, mineral-accented cherry and dark berry liqueur, cola, licorice and potpourri scents are complemented by an exotic spice nuance. Broad and fleshy in the mouth, offering deeply concentrated black raspberry, boysenberry and bitter cherry flavors that become sweeter and more lively as the wine opens up. Shows excellent clarity and floral lift and finishes extremely long and spicy, with steadily building tannins adding closing grip.

Just about perfection in a glass, the 2017 Châteauneuf Du Pape Reserve Auguste Favier reveals a deep purple color as well as extraordinary notes of blackcurrants, blackberries, smoked meats, incense, and dried flowers. Always based on Grenache yet with 10-15% Cinsault, this full-bodied, deep, opulent Châteauneuf Du Pape tastes like the essence of Provence, is incredibly complex, has sweet tannins, and despite all its richness and depth, stays pure, fresh, and light on its feet. It’s one of the finest vintages of this cuvée to date!

Limpid ruby-red. A highly complex, mineral-accented bouquet displays Chambord, incense and baking spice qualities, and a suave floral nuance builds with air. Stains the palate with lively, sharply delineated red berry liqueur, lavender and spicecake flavors braced by a core of juicy acidity. In a vibrant style, finishing spicy and very long, leaving notes of candied flowers behind.

Always the most elegant wine on the lineup, the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Reserve Auguste Favier is mostly Grenache yet has a solid amount of Cinsault, and it can include a splash of Mourvèdre in some vintages. This beauty offers deeper, richer notes of redcurrants, bouquet garni, and earth, full-bodied richness, a smoky, meaty character, plenty of mid-palate stuffing, and a great finish.
