Vinous (96)Salicutti’s 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Piaggione lifts from the glass with the most exquisite aromatics imaginable. The 2010 has really come together over the last six months. I suppose that should not be too much of a surprise, as the 2010 was bottled later than normal, but I am still deeply impressed with how nuanced and complete the Piaggione is today. Proprietor Francesco Leanza has done a fabulous job elevating these wines over the last few years. This is another Brunello that on any other night is the best wine on the table. Tonight it is merely sublime and haunting in its beauty. |

Vinous (97)Fully saturated red. Captivating aromas of red cherry, strawberry nectar, roses, violet and sweet spices. Dense, juicy and extremely well-balanced, with vibrant flavors of red fruit, spices and minerals complicated by notes of sweet pipe tobacco and coffee. The finish is long, precise and very pure. One of the year’s best Brunellos. |

Falstaff (96)Clear ruby. Charming nose with rich notes of ripe plums, some cranberry and wild raspberry, liquorice in the background. Characterised on the palate by grippy, gripping tannin, hearty, fine ripe fruit, seems a bit rough on the finish. |

Vinous (92)The 2017 Brunello di Montalcino Piaggione is a beautiful beast, bursting from the glass with a smoky mix of sage, cinnamon, black cherries and dusty rose. Its textures are silky and polished, ushering in a potent blend of raspberry and exotic spice, yet with a core of zesty acidity that maintains fantastic balance. Grippy tannins clamp down through the finale, yet fail to slow the momentum within, as the 2017 Piaggione maintains an almost-juicy character. This may not be a classic expression of Salicutti Brunello, taking vintage into consideration, but it is packed full of balanced pleasures. Well done. |
