Vinous (90)(15% alcohol): Bright red. Floral red berries and spicy red cherry on the bright nose. Then fresh and clean in the mouth, with mineral and inky notes complementing sweet dark cherry and underbrush flavors. The long finish features supple tannins and a repeating inky nuance. Much better than the 2007 Brunello normale. |

Vinous (92)Fanti's 2015 Brunello di Montalcino is fruit-forward and extroverted at first, as a wave of ripe black cherry with a sweet dusting of spice wafts up from the glass; with more coaxing, grounding notes of smoky minerals and undergrowth develop. On the palate, soft textures usher in fleshy ripe strawberry, and juicy acids create a fresh and mouthwatering expression. The finish is long, showing the first hint of youthful tannins, which tug at the senses as dried berries and inner florals slowly fade. This is already giving a lot of pleasure, but a few years of cellaring should reveal further depth. |

Vinous (90)The 2017 Brunello di Montalcino is dark and balsamic in style, offering wild berries and woodland herbs complemented by hints of clove and cocoa. It’s unbelievably rich and potent, and almost creamy in texture, with ripe black currants and plums giving way to hints of mocha. This wraps the palate up tightly, delivering grippy tannins and a layer of primary concentration that creates an aching tension, as hints of licorice and bitter chocolate fade. The massive and powerful 2017 has all of the right ingredients in the right proportions to mature evenly. That said, I believe it will always have the feel of a caged beast. |

Vinous (93)The 2018 Brunello di Montalcino opens like a spice box full of exotic treasures. Steeped cherries, crushed cranberries, violet pastille, spiced blood orange and dusty rose can all be found as it opens in the glass. It splashes across the palate, full of energy and juicy in style, with a seductive core of ripe wild berry fruits and inner florals. This doesn’t miss a beat, finishing amazingly fresh and vibrant, with nuances of blackberry and sour citrus framed by a subtle staining of fine tannins. Fanti really outdid themselves; the 2018 Brunello is a beauty. |

Vinous (89)The 2011 Brunello di Montalcino is fleshy and forward, with plenty of sweet red stone fruit, macerated cherry, tobacco, spice and plum fruit. The extracted style and accompanying imposing tannins are a bit much for the wine's mid-weight structure. The 2011 is quite ripe and intense, yet the tannins are not fully mature, which suggests heat stress may have been an issue during the torrid second half of August. I would prefer to drink the 2011 sooner rather than later, as the fruit is likely to fade before the tannins soften. Hints of crushed flowers, sweet tobacco and red flowers add the closing shades of nuance. The 2011 was aged in a combination of tonneau and 30-HL casks. |

James Suckling (98)Wow. This is really fantastic with outstanding depth of fruit and ripe and silky tannins. So much blueberry and cedar character with hints of flowers. Full body, fine tannins and a fresh and clean finish. Lovely balance to this wine. Better after 2022 but already exciting to taste. |

James Suckling (99)The opulence and decadence is really something here with dried fruit, figs, meat and black truffles on the nose and palate. It’s full-bodied, layered and creamy with intense, round tannins and a finish that lasts for minutes. Best after 2022, but already a joy to taste. |

Vinous (92)The 2011 Brunello di Montalcino Le Lucere emerges from the estate's oldest vines. Here the balance of fruit and tannin is much more successful. Sensual and layered in the glass, the Lucere offers good up-front richness to match its creamy, inviting personality. Generous black cherry, plum, smoke, spice and menthol flesh out on a resonant finish laced with attractive aromatic overtones. In this vintage, the oak and tannins are very nicely balanced, something that hasn't always been the case here. At times, the ripeness of the vintage is a bit dominant, but this is a gorgeous wine from San Filippo. |
