San Leonardo

About San Leonardo

Trentino's San Leonardo is dubbed the Sassicaia of Northern Italy for a good reason; San Leonardo’s owner, Marchese Carlo Guerrieri Gonzaga, spent time at Tenuta San Guido (the producer of Sassicaia) in the 1960s, and even employed the same consultant, the legendary Giacomo Tachis, as the fabled estate.

His incomparable pedigree extends way beyond the training with Tachis. Having inspired by the greatest minds of both Bordeaux and Italian winemaking, Gonzaga also worked under the late Émile Peynaud, the world's most influential enologist, before returning to his family's estate. Now taking charge of the ancestral property, he works closely with the fabled Italian winemaker Carlo Ferrini, the forger of multiple 100 point scores at Tenuta Giodo, who occupies a consulting role at San Leonardo.

San Leonardo 2001 (1x150cl)

Wine Advocate (95)

The lovely 2001 San Leonardo is a wine in its adolescence phase. Its pedigree is cemented, but its future is still open to chance. This was an excellent vintage that saw pre-harvest rains and warm, dry weather once the fruit had reached optimal ripeness. With this vintage, you begin to get some of the younger aromas that distinguish this great red wine from the far north of Italy. Red cherry and blackberry are followed by chocolate, spice and moist leather. The wine is more immediate, modern and international with soft tannins and thick extraction. It opens with a bang and follows through to the end of the palate with the same generous intensity. I'd suggest parking this wine in your cellar for up to ten years or more.

San Leonardo 2006 (1x150cl)

Wine Advocate (95)

From yet another great vintage, the 2006 San Leonardo exudes elegance and sophistication. A slightly cooler summer season helped to cement the wine's aromatic complexity and the fresh sense of acidity that lends so much energy and vitality to this wine. This is a great vintage that has only begun to find its true voice. It needs more time in the cellar to complete its evolution. Dark fruit nuances with thick concentration and velvety tannins segue to drying mineral notes and more cherry brightness. I'd suggest another ten years of cellar aging. But you could also opt to drink the wine sooner with prolonged decanting (of four hours or more).

San Leonardo 2015 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (97+)

The 2015 San Leonardo pours forth with a beautiful velvety appearance and sultry dark garnet color. This wine shows a lot of life and dark fruit purity with black plum, blackberry, cassis and tarry prune. There is a delightful note of black pepper that is specific to this warm and sunny vintage. The fruit shows softer and richer concentration compared to past vintages and more pulpy density that gives this edition a bigger profile in terms of mouthfeel. Production is 75,000 bottles. San Leonardo is a wine made for long aging, but the nice thing about this vintage is that the bouquet remains quite accessible at this young age. Nevertheless, I'd still suggest keeping this bottle in your cellar so that it can calmly finish its evolution.

San Leonardo 2016 (6x75cl)

Vinous (94-96)

Deep, dark and sensual, the 2016 Tenuta San Leonardo lifts from the glass with an alluring mix of crushed blackberry and plum. With time it blossoms further to reveal tobacco, brown spice, white smoke and peppery florals. It's velvety and wonderfully textural, yet also energized by a complex mix of stimulating acids and minerals, giving life to ripe fruits, as youthful tannins slowly clamp down. The finish is incredibly long and structured. There’s energy and verve, mixing black raspberry with hints of licorice under an air of purple-tinged flowers. The 2016 has a lot to like, quite primary today but a year away from release. This early preview, which has been bottled for a year now, is full of potential. Very nice!

San Leonardo Villa Gresti 2015 (6x75cl)

Vinous (93)

The 2015 Villa Gresti di San Leonardo is a blend of Merlot with a dollop of Carmenère from an old vineyard located around Villa Gresti. It opens up with breathtaking aromatics, showing dusty black cherry and wild blueberry with a peppery, herbal infusion, as notes of moist dark soil and roses form. There’s a stimulating mixture of acids and salty minerals that offsets its silky textures in a red-fruited display that is more savory than sweet. Tannins build but never get in the way, finishing lifted and refined, with notes of blueberry skins and herbs. Wow.
