    San Polino

    About San Polino

San Polino is a tiny, family-run estate which has pioneered organic and biodynamic approaches to viticulture in Montalcino.

Certified organic in 1994, proprietors Luigi Fabbro and Katia Nussbaum meticulously tend just 4 hectares using biodynamic principles. They manage their vineyards with incredible precision to encourage biodiversity, maintaining a healthy and sustainable ecosystem that allows the purest expression of Sangiovese to blossom from their majestic terroir.

San Polino Brunello Montalcino Helichrysum 2009 (6x75cl)
    Inc. VAT: £448.07
    2009

San Polino Brunello Montalcino Helichrysum 2009 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (88)

The 2009 Brunello di Montalcino Helichrysum redeems some of the shortcomings of San Polino’s base 2009 Brunello. Although the wine feels sticky and chewy in the mouth with an evidently mature quality of fruit, Helichrysum is characteristic of a hot Brunello vintage. You’ll recognize tones of jammy fruit, cherry cough drop and sweet maple syrup. Drink: 2016-2020.

    James Suckling (97-98)

This is an impressive wine with blackberry, currant and spice. Full body, chewy tannins and a flavorful finish. A rich and structured young Brunello. Try in 2021.

    2015

San Polino Brunello Montalcino Helichrysum 2015 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (94.5)

Full ruby-red. Aromas of cherry nectar, blackberry, licorice and minerals. Juicy and tightly wound but essentially pliant, with an austere quality to the youthfully chewy black and red fruit and licorice flavors complicated by fresh herbs. Partly barrel fermented, this has noteworthy depth but is still a baby today that needs plenty of cellaring. Finishes long.

    2016

San Polino Brunello Montalcino Helichrysum 2016 (6x75cl)

    James Suckling (98)

Wow. This is really complex on the nose with black cherries, mushrooms, dried flowers and cedar. Some crushed stone and dry earth or tile. This is full-bodied and very layered with wonderful depth of fruit and creamy tannins. It’s focused and serene. Better than 2015. From organically grown grapes. Try in 2024 and onwards.

The purity and polish here shows wonderfully the moment you stick your nose in the glass, with complex aromas of plums, berries, cedar and violets. It’s full-bodied and ever so refined with elegant and intense tannins that take you deep into the wine. This is a thoughtful and finely crafted Brunello that needs time to show you its greatness.
