Santa Duc

Domaine Santa Duc dates back to 1874, with five generations of family ownership connecting the people with the place. Now under the direction of the indomitable Yves Gras, the estate has pioneered a shift to organic viticulture in the appellation. Yves uses indigenous yeasts and bottles without filtration.

Santa Duc Gigondas Les Hautes Garrigues 2005 (12x75cl)

Wine Advocate (92-95)

The top flagship cuvee of the estate, the 2005 Gigondas Les Hautes Garrigues Cuvee Prestige, hadn't even started malolactic fermentation. This wine possesses extraordinary intensity, colossal richness, an inky blue/purple color, surprisingly lofty alcohol, but also high acidity which is a rather unusual characteristic. The wine is a backward bruiser/blockbuster with huge notes of creme de cassis, licorice, underbrush, and black truffle. I wouldn't touch this wine for another 5-6 years. It should age for close to two decades.

Santa Duc Gigondas Les Hautes Garrigues 2017 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (95-97)

A blend of 60% Grenache and 40% Mourvèdre, the 2017 Gigondas Les Hautes Garrigues is less aromatic than it was last year, folding in darker notes of black cherries and chocolate. Yet it's still wonderfully full and textured, with a plush, velvety feel and a long finish. It seems to grow in aroma and flavor the longer it's in the glass, always a good sign.
