Sylvain Cathiard
About Sylvain Cathiard
Originating from Savoie and arriving in Burgundy to work with the imperious Domaine de la Romanée Conti and Domaine Lamarche, the Cathiard family possess one of the most impressive collective CVs in the world. It has, expectedly, forged its glorious reputation later when they started a winery themselves.
Currently at the helm is Sebastian Cathiard, the third generation of the family, who cultivates a mere 5.5 hectares of land spread over so many sites with none bigger than one hectare. For context, the largest cuvée Cathiard produces is the Bourgogne Rouge, which sees just over 2,000 bottles of production each year.
Because of the scarcity, the unmatched demand and the heavy allocation for top restaurants, his wines are, naturally, some of the hardest to acquire.

Vinous (92-94)
The 2017 Vosne-Romanée En Orveaux comes from 75-year-old vines from massal selection that tend to suffer millerandage that enhances air circulation around the bunches. Matured in 50% new oak, it has a fragrant mixture of red and blue fruit on the very floral nose: scents of pressed violets waft up from the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, and there is a palpable marine influence, shucked oyster shells permeating the red fruit toward quite a feisty finish. Superb.Inc. VAT£750.53 -

The 2018 Vosne-Romanée En Orveaux 1er Cru is perhaps the overlooked gem within Cathiard’s portfolio, a view shared by the winemaker himself. This latest iteration has brilliant delineation on the nose, offering intense blackberry, raspberry and crushed mineral aromas that blossom with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with filigreed tannins, a killer line of acidity and a sense of symmetry toward the long finish. This is outstanding.Inc. VAT£615.72 -

Sweet Spot Outstanding. Here too the nose is gorgeously airy, layered and stylish with its ultra-spicy aromas of black raspberry coulis, floral and similar tea nuances. The rich, delicious and voluminous middle weight flavors are also a bit more powerful than usual with good minerality in evidence on the balanced and strikingly persistent finish. This too is excellent.Inc. VAT£475.73 -

Palish bright red. Pungent aromas of raspberry, minerals and orange peel; this is more like it. Sweet and silky in the mouth, with explosive flavors of raspberry, spices and minerals, and a hint of chocolatey torrefaction. Ripe acids prolong the tangy, spicy finish. Very sexy wine, showing much better today than the Orveaux.Inc. VAT£12,252.07 -

Good full red. Complex, expressive, soil-driven nose offers raspberry, cocoa powder, spices and flinty minerality. Sappy and sweet in the mouth, with a penetrating quality to the flavors of red berries, flowers and spices. Here the 100% oak adds sex appeal without overwhelming the wine. Finishes very long, with suave tannins providing solid structural support.Inc. VAT£5,297.09 -

Good, bright deep red. Aromas of black raspberry, mocha, cocoa and chocolatey oak. Sweet and thick but energetic, with a chocolatey richness to the lightly saline flavors of dark berries, spices and minerals. A bit clenched on the back end but dense and very long, and not at all heavy. A very good vintage for this cuvee.Inc. VAT£4,886.35 -
Vinous (91-94)
Good bright, deep red. Black raspberry, maraschino cherry and a whiff of meat on the compelling nose. Thick, tactile and utterly smooth on the palate, but with real energy and mineral lift to the flavors of dark fruits, mint and wild herbs. Finishes with serious tannic clout but has the stuffing to support it. This impressively vibrant wine should reward eight to ten years of cellaring.Inc. VAT£7,357.92 -

The 2015 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots, matured in two-thirds new oak, has a bewitching bouquet that is very pure and intense, layers of dark cherry and wild strawberry fruit tinged with iodine that seems to blossom in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with quite firm tannin and structured, underneath those intense dark berry fruit, a touch of salinity towards the finish that keeps the senses searching and eager for the next sip. Typical of Cathiard's style of winemaking, this is just a brilliant Les Suchots from one of its finest exponents.Inc. VAT£4,047.96 -

(Don't Miss! Outstanding) Once again, the nose is wonderfully spicy with its very Vosne aromas of anise, clove, soy, hoisin and sandalwood wisps that add serious breadth to the ripe and liqueur-like black fruit scents.
