Sylvain Cathiard
About Sylvain Cathiard
Originating from Savoie and arriving in Burgundy to work with the imperious Domaine de la Romanée Conti and Domaine Lamarche, the Cathiard family possess one of the most impressive collective CVs in the world. It has, expectedly, forged its glorious reputation later when they started a winery themselves.
Currently at the helm is Sebastian Cathiard, the third generation of the family, who cultivates a mere 5.5 hectares of land spread over so many sites with none bigger than one hectare. For context, the largest cuvée Cathiard produces is the Bourgogne Rouge, which sees just over 2,000 bottles of production each year.
Because of the scarcity, the unmatched demand and the heavy allocation for top restaurants, his wines are, naturally, some of the hardest to acquire.

The 2020 Vosne-Romanée Aux Malconsorts 1er Cru has a very intense and opulent bouquet that is currently less expressive than the Les Suchots, but I find more breeding and delineation here, more terroir expression. The 2021 Vosne-Romanée Aux Malconsorts 1er Cru takes time to really cohere on the nose, more backward than recent vintages, sultry even. This seems to lean more towards black fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with strict tannins. There's backbone here, assertiveness, yet without the density or opulence that has come to define Cathiard's style, so very different. This will require some time in bottle but will have much to offer.Inc. VAT£782.52 -

5 Star Wine. A fine bright ruby purple. As always, this cuvée has an extra density over and above the other fine Vosne premiers crus. Indeed, there is so much volume of fruit here, while never becoming over opulent. Welcome back to a first-class vintage of Malconsorts! The finish is exceptionally long, with a useful thread of fine boned acidity extending it further. The tannins are completely integrated. Stunning! So fine, such precision. Drink from 2030-2040. The 2023 Vosne-Romanée Aux Malconsorts 1er Cru is a kindred spirit to the Les Suchots on the nose, sharing the same purity and utterly entrancing delineation. The two-thirds new oak is seamlessly integrated. The palate is beautifully balanced with a bit more grip and maybe a little more backbone than the Les Suchots, yet there is so much harmony and poise toward the finish. Outstanding.Inc. (12x75cl) 2005Wine Advocate (90-91)
The Cathiard 2005 Vosne-Romanee Aux Reignots displays black cherry, clove, cinnamon and cumin aromatics, fine continuation of spice and luscious black cherry and cassis fruit with a flattering, supple feel, though it’s overall just a bit too marked by obvious wood for its own good, and slightly less texturally-refined than Cathiard’s Chambolle. His vines in Reignots are only approaching twenty years of age. Interestingly, I recently revisited the last vintage from old vines, 1987, and that wine was still attractive, if a bit attenuated. Also recommended: 2005 Bourgogne ($39.00;85).Inc. VAT£12,766.18 -
Vinous (89-92)
(from 11-year-old vines planted to three clones): Good full, bright red. Very floral, perfumed aromas of black cherry, lavender and cardamom. Spicy, sweet and expressive but with less depth than the Murgeys. But this boasts impressive power and intensity for young vines and is not overpowered by oak. Tannins are a bit less fine than those of the Murgeys, though.Inc. VAT£1,324.13 -

Bright red. Pretty, scented nose offers raspberry, rose petal, Oriental spices and crushed rock; Vosne in a Chambolle direction. Then leanish and vibrant on the palate, with strong but harmonious acidity framing the flavors of dark fruits, flowers and minerals. Not fleshy but showy and enticing. Finishes with excellent verve and cut. These relatively young vines (planted in 1997) were farmed en bio for the first time in 2011.Inc. VAT£6,510.72 -
Vinous (91-93)
(these 18-year-old vines are planted to three clones): The most reduced of these 2014s on the nose, but still with captivating scents of black raspberry, licorice and pungent crushed-rock minerality. Delivers a wonderfully silky texture enlivened by harmonious acidity. One senses a strong rocky element and yet the wine shows no edges. This seamless wine boasts a long, rising finish featuring a hint of dark chocolate and noble tannins. A beauty, and clearly a bottling to follow as the vines continue to mature.Inc. VAT£6,178.32 -

The 2015 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Reignots has a gorgeous bouquet with mineral-rich red cherry, kirsch and strawberry fruit, quite open and expressive yet still beautifully defined. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp acidity, sorbet-fresh with hints of orange rind permeating the vibrant, fresh, tensile, almost tart red fruit, with a crisp and vivacious, animated finish. This barrel sample had so much energy that I almost asked Sebastien Cathiard for a leash. Electric!Inc. VAT£1,192.92 -

The 2018 Vosne-Romanée Aux Reignots 1er Cru possesses a very harmonious, understated bouquet that gradually unfurls to reveal enticing black cherry, raspberry and crushed stone aromas, later becoming more floral in style but always retaining a sense of control. The palate is extremely precise and very smooth. Perhaps this is the one cuvée from Cathiard where slightly earlier picking might have engendered more precision on the finish, which flirts with exotic notes, pulling back just in time. The 2020 Vosne-Romanée Aux Reignots 1er Cru, from vines planted in 1997, has a very ripe nose with black cherries and fig, powerful and maybe not quite as well defined as the En Orveaux. Palish red. Smoky, meaty nose doesn't show quite the purity this wine displayed from barrel. Broad and sweet but a bit youthfully closed; in a rather unforthcoming stage. This is round for the vintage but the lingering finish shows a trace of dryness. An awkward showing.Inc. VAT£8,431.61 -
(12x75cl) 2005Wine Advocate (92)
The 2005 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru En Orveaux from Sylvain Cathiard is a lavish, dramatically ripe wine that soars from the glass with a decadent bouquet of cherries, blackberry preserve, cassis and dark chocolate, framed by oak vanillin. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, powerful and ample, with a generous core of sweet fruit, fine-grained structuring tannins and sufficient succulent acidity to remain in balance despite its ripeness. Inevitably, this begs the question of to what extent it's a precursor of Cathiard's 2015s: my supposition is the younger vintage will be more precise and controlled at maturity, its oak influence more completely integrated, while retaining the exuberant expression of fruit found in the 2005s. Of course, only time will tell.Inc. VAT£12,683.04 -

Good full red. Complex nose offers black cherry, brown spices, minerals, rose petal and menthol. Silky-sweet and perfumed, with a captivating spicy perfume in the mouth. Good deep red. Knockout slightly high-toned nose melds raspberry, smoky minerality and flowers. Silky on entry, then an explosion of spices in the middle palate, with almost painful energy to the red berry, crushed stone and pepper flavors. Wonderfully rich yet somehow weightless. A real essence of Burgundy. Finishes very long, with suave tannins. I'd give this beauty a decade in the cellar. Cathiard loves it today but believes it will shut down in the bottle.Inc. Bright red. Black raspberry, spices, animal fur and smoky minerality on the nose, with a light jammy suggestion and some pungent oak. Creamy-sweet and lush on the palate, with an old-viney thickness of texture that really saturates the mouth on the finish.
