    Telmo Rodriguez

Telmo Rodriquez is a winemaker dedicated to terroir, and determined to display the quality and character of Rioja's complex, dynamic soils. The wines are matured in very cold cellars where they go through their fermentations at a snail's pace; allowing the full breadth of terroir expression to come into their own before bottling. A penchant for mineral on the level of the top level Priorat and Burgundy wines, Telmo rodriguez has hit the nail on the head with this modern, stylish Rioja; that Jancis Robinson has described as "incredibly fine... one of the most beautiful wines I have tasted in a long time." Surely they are bound to breath new life into a time-honoured region.

    Wine Advocate (96)

The 2007 Altos de Lanzaga has a spellbinding, pure bouquet of red currant, wild strawberry and thyme that is imbued with immense purity and delineation. The palate has a satin-like texture with superb acidity and filigree tannins that lend it a Burgundian, Romanee-St.-Vivant inspired finish. This is an exquisite follow-up to the brilliant 2006. Telmo Rodriguez Altos Lanzaga 2012 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (95)

There is an extra degree of elegance, precision and focus in the 2012 Altos de Lanzaga compared with the regular Lanzaga from that same year. It is produced from four small plots of over 70-year-old vines at 500-600 meters altitude, planted on very poor soils that are biodynamically farmed. It fermented in 3,000-kilo oak vats for 20 days with indigenous yeasts, and matured in 1,500-liter oak foudres and 225-liter barriques for some 18 months. The nose might be a little reticent at first, quite subtle, serious, balanced, a little backward. There is great balance, very fine tannins and very good freshness. This wine is very tasty, combining elegance and power. This is a very good vintage of Altos, with enough stuffing and balance to age magnificently in bottle. 2,500 bottles were filled in June 2014.

    Telmo Rodriguez Falcoeira 'A Capilla' 2018 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (95)

The 2018 Falcoeira A Capilla comes from a wet and somewhat challenging year given the warm summer after a rainy spring that made them work hard in the vineyards. This comes from a field blend of Mencía, Brancellao, Sousón, Garnacha Tintorera and other grapes that they replanted on steep terraces on granite soils at 400 to 600 meters in altitude. It fermented in 3,000-kilo oak vats with indigenous yeasts and matured in a 2,000-liter oak foudre. It has moderate alcohol despite being from a warm exposure. This is a wine that has been improving every year, and in the cooler 2018 vintage, it comes through as very aromatic, floral, elegant and expressive (I said Burgundian, and Pablo didn't like it very much). It's a medium-bodied red, beautifully textured, with very fine tannins, the granite grainy feeling and a dry and long finish with pungent flavors. I love it! 1,200 bottles were filled in June 2020.

    2016

Telmo Rodriguez Malaga Molino Real Mountain Wine 2016 (6x50cl)

    Wine Advocate (95)

2016 was dry and late in Málaga because of a delay in the vegetative cycle given the rains of May that also favored mildew that resulted in lower yields. The 2016 Molino Real is the flagship sweet Moscatel from the Málaga Mountains and wears the subtitle Mountain Wine; it comes from nine hectares of vineyards spread between 350 and almost 1,000 meters in altitude on slate slopes. It has a long and complex fermentation in 225-liter oak barrels, where the wine evolved slowly at low temperature for 20 months. This is an incredibly fine and elegant vintage that is herbal and fresh and less varietal than other vintages. It's subtle and balanced, sweet without excess. 4,132 500-milliliter bottles were filled in June 2018.
