    Thierry Germain

Making an almost unheard of move from Bordeaux to the Loire Valley in the early 1990s, Thierry Germain is one of Saumur's finest producers and a leading light in the new wave sweeping the region into the future. Specialising in Cabernet he manages to avoid the classic vegetal, rustic characteristics, focussing on purity, freshness and clean fruit. His whites are no less thrilling however, with his Chenins balancing a fine line between the classic honeysuckle richness of Vouvray with the whistle-clean linearity of a Chablis. If you are looking for a definition of Saumur's class and potential it is to be found here.

Pale yellow. Shy, pure nose displays fresh pear, vineyard peach and lemon blossom, plus a touch of honey and a smoky nuance. Full-bodied and powerfully juicy, with a nicely integrated hint of residual sugar held in check by the refreshing crispness. Clean, warm and enormously deep, with exotic papaya and subtle spices lingering on the long finish. This enclosed plot in Dampierre overlooking the Loire has only belonged to the estate for a few years, but the vines for this chenin blanc are 60 year old. Only about 1,200 bottles are made in a normal year.

The Saumur Champigny label changes color every year, and in 2020 it's lilac. This might not be one of the estate’s single-vineyard cuvées but it offers delight with its bright, ripe fruit and sense of purity and transparency. There's nothing forced here (or in any of the other Roches Neuves wines, for that matter). Very natural and dangerously more-ish.

From Souzay-Champigny and cultivated on clay-limestone terroir with just a 30-centimeter layer of clayey sand before the Seonian limestone is present, the 2019 Saumur Blanc Clos Romans has a straw yellow color and a deep yet subtle and complex bouquet of white fruits intertwined with the flinty limestone aromas. Pure, fresh and juicy, with great finesse and mineral tension, this is a refined and highly elegant Saumur Chenin with a persistent, sustainably structured finish. It's an impressive wine and one of the finest dry Chenins I have had from the Loire this year. Tasted in June 2021.

It’s an “orange wine,” for sure, but for now, in its youth, the 2018 Saumur Blanc Terres is just kind of golden. The nose is full of apple and pear, with a cidery note, along with earth and citrus peel. In the mouth, there’s a lot of pear and pineapple. I find it adventurous and unique. The 2018 spent 4 months macerating in amphora.

The 2019 Saumur Champigny Clos de L'Echelier is round and gently calm, almost meditative, but the chalky soil keeps things fresh and moving along despite the warmth of the growing season. There's delicacy on the midpalate and chalky finesse and fine tension on the lengthy finish, which is scented with red fruits and flowers. Outstanding stuff.

Saturated ruby. Enticing aromas of wild raspberry, bitter chocolate, violet and mint. Subtle and delicate, with an edge of acidity giving shape to the blackcurrant and spice flavors. Finishing with slightly herbal tannins and lovely complexity, this light and tender cabernet franc has only 11.8% alcohol. The vines were planted in 2004 on their own roots in a sandy garden that was previously owned by the mayor. The first vintage was 2008. Only 1,500 bottles made.

The 2020 Franc de Pied is incredibly reductive when it was first opened and needed a lot of time and a swirl with a copper coin. If you can be patient (5 minutes with a penny in your glass, or your currency's equivalent), it's worth the wait. It reveals itself to be a richly fruited, savory style that fills the mouth with a balloon of chalky silkiness. The limestone element really shows itself on the long finish, all finely grained texture and sinew. As you'd hope from Saumur-Champigny, there's no sense of weight or heft. Delectable now but has the structure to develop over the coming two decades.

Bright ruby. Deep, youthful aromas of cherry, licorice and smoky herbs. Subtle but lush dark fruit flavors become sweeter on the back of the palate, with a hint of sassafras adding nuance. The refreshingly brisk finish leaves crushed black pepper and herbal spices behind. Reward this bottle with another few years of cellaring. 10,000 bottles made.

The purple colored 2013 La Marginale offers a very clear, pure and intense, but also refreshing bouquet of dark berries intertwined with floral and tea aromas. Silky textured, tart but with finesse, this is a medium-bodied, elegant and well-balanced wine; it has a vivacious acidity, nice grip, herb fruit and leather flavors in the finish.

Vivid, with a lovely beam of cassis and dark cherry puree racing through, flanked by hints of graphite and alder and scored by flashes of bay, olive and sweet tobacco through the finish. A Loire red lover's dream. Drink now through 2026. 42 cases imported.

From the fosse de Chaintres - a bowl-like dip behind the village of Chaintres - La Marginale comes from a parcel of vines that sits on clay over limestone. The 2020 is a round and open wine; it bursts with red raspberry and coulis-like flavours combined with a hint of festive spice. A primary, silken style with a coating of powdery tannins that will leave you with a sensation of a chalky powder coating all surfaces of your mouth in a round embrace.

Cabernet Franc planted in 1904 on flint and limestone. Deep cherry red with a dusty dark and mineral aroma. Beautifully stony, lithe, leafy but ripe. Juicy and deep with great freshness. And much more to come though it is delicious now.

From vines planted in 1904 that sit on both flint and limestone, which is a rare combination in Saumur-Champigny, the 2019 Les Memoires is all purity of coulis-like fruit. It offers incredible concentration yet floats in the mouth like a weightless cloud. If there were a Cabernet Franc equivalent of Chambolle Musigny, this would be it. I love it. The finest of chalky tannins are just present on the finish, as if to remind you this is a red wine.
