Uccelliera
About Uccelliera
Hailing from a family of sharecroppers from Castelnuovo dell’Abate, Andrea Cortonesi worked for numerous producers, most notably Ciacci Piccolomini d’Aragona, until he acquired the Uccelliera farm in 1986 to strike out on his own. In fact, the Uccelliera estate was once part of the Ciacci estate until Andrea’s acquisition. Credited with production of the famed 1988 and 1990 vintages of Ciacci that propelled it into the global limelight, Andrea can count himself as one of Monica Larner’s favourite Brunello producers.
“If anyone embodies the amazing growth of Brunello di Montalcino that person is Andrea.”
Monica Larner (Wine Advocate)

Vinous (92)Smoke, tobacco, cedar and roasted coffee beans wrap around a core of juicy dark cherries and plums in the 2010 Brunello di Montalcino. There is plenty of depth in the glass, but, as is often the case here, three years in oak yields a wine with slightly oxidative overtones. Powerful, incisive tannins support the finish. |

Vinous (96+)The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino blends richness, ripeness and refinement to create a model of total balance. At first, it’s dark, earthy and herbal; yet with time in the glass, a massive wave of black cherry, raspberry, sage and a grounding note of undergrowth comes forward. In the mouth, it coats all that it touches in silky, cool-toned textures, giving way to ripe red/black fruits complemented by spiced citrus, as nuances of lavender and tobacco form. While this feels round and pliant throughout, fine-grain tannins slowly saturate, sneaking up and reminding you of just how young the 2016 really is today. Hints of baker’s chocolate, licorice and a twang of tart blackberry resonate - wow, does it ever end? |

Jeb Dunnuck (96)A ripe red color, the 2019 Brunello Di Montalcino is expressive of its place, with warming notes of licorice, black cherries, anise, cedar, and dark soil lifting from the glass. As it opens, it becomes purer in its fruit profile, shining through beautifully. Full-bodied, with ripe tannins and a savory slanting profile, notes of espresso and mocha float across the palate, filling it with purity of fruit and lovely concentration through its long finish. It’s a fantastic Brunello with a warming richness that can stand up to hearty winter foods and will be best enjoyed over the next 15 years. Drink 2026-2040. |
