Valdespino
About Valdespino
With over 600 years of experience crafting sherry deep in Jerez, Valdespino remains a traditional Bodega which, until 1999, had been owned in an unbroken chain since 1264 by the same family. Still dedicated to excellence, Valdespino is easily one of the most historic producers in the region – the land was awarded to the knight Alfonso Valdespino by King Alfonso X for his gallantry in liberating Jerez from the Moors.
Viniculture
Deep in the heart of Jerez (in southwestern Spain near Cádiz), Valdespino is one of the very few producers to craft single-vineyard wines in Jerez. The unfortified, dry Vina Macharnudo Alto Palomino is sourced from the Macharnudo Alto vineyard that is perched at 135 metres above sea level. This site is composed of classic Albariza soils. An expression of this glorious Spanish terroir, Vina Macharnudo Alto Palomino is a dry white wine made from 100% Palamino and it is fermented in sherry casks where it then ages on the lees for six months, gaining further complexity and texture. Rather than passing through the solera system to produce a Sherry, Valdespino chooses to bottle this as a single vintage wine. Historically, this style is known as “natural sherry” as the wine is not fortified.
