    Valdicava

    About Valdicava

Described by Robert Parker as “top three or four Brunello di Montalcino producers”, the estate of Valdicava, sits right in the very top tier of Brunello wineries.

Currently in the loving hands of Vincenzo Abbruzzese, Valdicava is located in the northern part of Montalcino. The estate overlooks Tuscany at an altitude of 300m. At this height, the vineyards of Valdicava enjoys a cooler climate than most Brunello peers. Valdicava is probably most known for their stunning Riserva Madonna del Piano which consistently rivals the finest wines made anywhere in Brunello di Montalcino.

Absolutely stunning aromas of nectarine, orange peel, sweet black cherry, plum, flower, licorice and mushroom. Full body with layers of ultra-fine tannins and hints of tangy acidity. Such beautiful length and beauty to this wine. It's powerful and structured but shows a gorgeous finesse and length. Truly wondrous. So long and refined. The texture is phenomenal. Better in 2016.

It goes on for minutes. I love the balance that makes it so enjoyable to try now but it will age for decades ahead. Try to leave it until 2021.

Full and firm with super integrated tannins that melt into the wine. It flows from the center palate in a beautiful sheet of fruit and tannins. Extremely long and coated with great finesse. Goes on for minutes. Better in 2022, but already a joy to taste.

    2009

Valdicava Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Madonna del Piano 2009 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (92)

Cedar, smoke, tobacco, licorice, dark cherries and plums meld together in the 2009 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Maddona del Piano. It is amazing to see just how much the Valdicava wines have changed over the last ten years or so. A decade ago, the Madonna del Piano was black, inky and impenetrable, but in 2009 it is a pretty classic wine. The flavor profile is full of Sangiovese signatures, while there is still quite a bit of the typical Valdicava richness in the glass. This is a terrific effort for a very challenging year.

Valdicava Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Madonna del Piano 2015 (6x75cl)

    James Suckling (100)

Spectacular aromas of crushed fruit, plums, sous bois, porcini and black truffles. Decadent year, but fresh. Full-bodied, dense and linear on the palate, yet so much in balance and refined with incredible depth and consistency. The savory and juicy finish, with vivid acidity and fruit, is eye-opening. Greatest ever. Best after 2025, but can’t wait to try it again.

    2011

Valdicava Rosso di Montalcino 2011 (12x75cl)

    Vinous (88)

The 2011 Rosso di Montalcino is the result of a severe selection that resulted in no Brunello being bottled in this vintage, a decision I imagine few producers are prepared to make. Tobacco, dried herbs and sweet red cherries all flesh out in this large-scaled powerful Rosso. There is plenty of depth to fill out the wine's broad frame. At the same time, the 2011 is clearly evolving fairly quickly and needs to be enjoyed sooner rather than later.

Valdicava Rosso di Montalcino 2014 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (88-90)

The 2014 Rosso di Montalcino represents the majority of the harvest in a year that was extremely challenging and plagued with rain in the days leading up to the harvest. A pleasant, fruit-driven Rosso, the 2014 is an attractive wine to drink now and over the next 2-3 years, while the fruit retains its brightness. Sweet spice and floral notes add an attractive upper register through to the supple finish. There is a limit to what Abbruzzese and his long-time winemaker Attilio Pagli could do in 2014, and this is it.
