Vinous (96)Dark and brooding in bearing, the 2021 Pichon Baron is a somber, mysterious wine. It is every bit as impressive as it was en primeur. Graphite, leather, spice, mocha and dried herbs meld together in a wine of power, precision and contemporary classicism. It's one of my early favorites in this vintage. I won't be too surprised if it turns out even better than this note suggests. |

Wine Advocate (98)Aromas of sweet dark berries and cherries mingled with notions of cigar wrapper, pencil shavings and licorice introduce the 2022 Pichon-Longueville Baron, a full-bodied, layered and multidimensional wine that's deep, dense and lively, with terrific concentration, sweet tannins and a long, penetrating finish. Integrated and serious, this hints at the lavishness inherent to the vintage, while remaining classic and controlled. This blend of 81% Cabernet Sauvignon and 19% Merlot was bottled in June. |

Jeb Dunnuck (97)A blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot aged 18 months in 70% new French oak, the 2023 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron is another classic wine from this impeccably run estate, which I suspect is making some of its greatest wines today. Ripe currants, spicy wood, graphite, and tobacco all emerge on the nose, and it’s medium to full-bodied, with a pure, graceful mouthfeel, plenty of tannins, and outstanding length. Reminding me of the 2008, and perhaps even the 2019, it’s a very classy, aristocratic style of Pichon Baron that stands out for its balance and length. Give bottles 4-5 years and enjoy them over the following 25+ years. There are roughly 12,600 cases produced. Drink 2030-2060. |

Vinous - Antonio Galloni (86-88)The 2013 Reserve de La Comtesse is soft, fruity and well-suited to near-term drinking. Dark raspberries, wild flowers and mint are all nicely delineated in the glass. The 2013 shows lovely up-front fruit, with perhaps a bit less mid-palate to fill out the frame, which in turn exposes the slightly under ripe tannins. Dried flowers, crushed raspberries and a gentle hint of spice linger on the close. The blend is 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Petit Verdot, 8% Cabernet Franc and 6% Merlot. Tasted twice. |

Vinous - Antonio Galloni (92-94)The 2021 Réserve de la Comtesse is a seriously great wine in its peer group. Or any peer group. Rich and layered, with no hard edges and compelling balance, the 2021 opens beautifully in the glass. Savory accents run through a core of black cherry and plum fruit, with hints of gravel, spice and leather that develop later. This year's blend includes 14% reserve wine, but that is not especially evident. I don't think I have ever tasted a more refined Réserve de la Comtesse. Superb. |

Jeb Dunnuck (100)I've been lucky enough to have had the 1982 Château Pichon-Longueville Comtesse De Lalande a half dozen times over the past few years and it continues to show magically. Tasted out of a magnum, it has a still lively plum/ruby hue as well as gorgeous Pauillac notes of blackcurrants, smoked earth, cedarwood, pencil lead, and forest floor. It's unquestionably fully mature and in that sweet spot where it has incredible aromatics, beautiful, sweet fruit, no hard edges, and a gorgeous finish. I don't see it falling off a cliff any time soon, yet there's no need to delay gratification either. This is a magical, heavenly Bordeaux I wish every reader could taste. |
