Vina El Pison has been delivering persistent greatness over the past eight years, and the magic of this vintage rests with its complexity, which is all about purity of immaculate fruit. The wine is minerally and complete, with impeccable powdery tannins that seamlessly coat the palate. It is bright, vibrant, floral and almost fruity, but still a bit timid on the nose. The palate shows what it is capable of, with melted, dissolved tannins and a long, minerally finish without much adornment. From organically grown grapes. Tasted twice, including a blind tasting against El Carretil, San Lazaro and La Poza de Ballesteros. It still stood out. Drink or hold.Inc. VAT£1,289.98 -

Decanter (99)
This is powerful and blows away much of the competition with its depth and layers. This needs you to pull up a chair, take a beat, and let the flavours unroll. There is so much density to the blueberry, bilberry and smoked raspberry fruits that they start out knitted down, then as the oxygen opens them up the body of the wine widens and becomes fleshier and creamier, adding chocolate and mocha notes. The limestone scrape is there in spades through the finish, and this is a cleverly constructed wine. As ever Ausone is just a masterclass in how to take apart and then put back together a terroir. Great stuff. First year of official conversion to organic farming. 100% new oak, some in 30hl oak casks. Could go up after tasting in bottle, a potential 100 points.Inc. VAT£2,046.78 -

Like a bouquet of fresh flowers on the nose, as well as blackberries, raspberries and blackcurrants. Sandalwood as well. Full-bodied with incredibly polished tannins that have the texture of the finest velvet. The palate is very fine, oriented with fabulously pure fruit and minerally and stone undertones at the finish. Could go up after tasting in bottle, a potential 100 points. In Bond£1,696.00 -
James Suckling (96-97)
Full-bodied, but so elegant and fresh, with a silky, elegant tannin texture. Very deep and expansive. Lots going on already with plenty of perfume. Blueberries, cloves, lavender and some wild-berry notes. Dark cocoa, too. Some espresso character at the end. Wonderful interplay of spices and fruit. Long. It keeps going. In Bond£2,495.00 -

All of the elements come together beautifully in the 2007 Barolo San Rocco, a wine that captures the essence of this great vintage as seen through the lens of one of Serralunga’s top sites. A dark, sensual Barolo, the San Rocco offers up a compelling array of blueberries, blackberries, smoke, licorice, spices and menthol. The finish is round, enveloping and powerful. There is an element of mystery to the San Rocco that is particularly intriguing. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2027.In Bond£515.00
