I can't wait to see how it ages. Bottled just six weeks before this tasting, the 2016 appears to have a very bright future. Time in the glass brings out some of the softer edges that will almost surely emerge with cellaring. The Flight is built on a core of older Merlot vines from the southeast corner of the estate. It is an absolutely riveting wine from Screaming Eagle. |

A truly majestic grape which is often wrongly overlooked in favour of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, Syrah can achieve things the others simply cannot, especially in the hands of those who have completely mastered it - Ratsel is massively concentrated and intense but retains a savoury edge to just season the layers-upon-layers of fruit, keeping this wine almost addictive. Perfectly balanced with ultra-fine tannins, its finish is seemingly endless yet utterly weightless. Whilst "Dirt Vernacular" is technically a blend, close to 80% of this wine is Grenache and it is this slightly more niche grape that really sings throughout the cuvee. Describing it as "straight-up heavenly stuff that tops out on my scale this year", Dunnuck once again found perfection in a 2016 Rhone varietal from Sine Qua Non. Grenache of this caliber is formidably structured yet exquisitely layered. The aromas of kirsch, berries, dark fruits, graphite, granite and fresh herbs never overwhelm, but rather introduce themselves with confidence and authority. The Krankls signature ability to combine power with elegance is yet again felt in this wine - one of the greatest Grenache-based wines ever made in California. |

Wine Advocate (100)I was blown away by the 2016 Finca Piedra Infinita, a wine I have been anticipating because I’ve seen the progression of the wine over the last few years. They use almost 40 different components to make this wine from small plots within the vineyard, especially the soils they call "supercalcáreo" (super limestone). The other type of soil they use is what they call "gravas calcáreas" (limestone gravels), and they don’t use any of the grapes from the deeper soils that go into the Q range. The wine has reached a stratospheric level of precision, symmetry and elegance in 2016 that is really captivating. Everything seems to be in its place; there is great harmony, the aromatics are clean and pure and the texture is like liquid chalk. There is power and elegance, energy and finesse. This is a really outstanding wine that summarizes the hard work at Zuccardi in the last few years. Bravo! 6,400 bottles were filled in February 2017. |

Everything seems to be in its place; there is great harmony, the aromatics are clean and pure and the texture is like liquid chalk. There is power and elegance, energy and finesse. North America is somewhat difficult to pigeonhole – though technically ‘new world’, it is in the Northern Hemisphere, and the wines have the same devoted fan base (and often first-growth prices) as many classic European wines. Cooler climate Cabs, Merlots, Pinots, Chardonnays and Rieslings with old-world structure can all be found, though if anything is lacking by comparison it is consistency.
South America is an exciting new melting pot of styles and flavours with a range of soils types and altitudes – taking international varietals and finishing with French winemaking techniques, or in the case of Argentinian Malbec, adopting a largely unloved grape and making it their own.
