Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne

After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.

Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.

"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Vinous (95-97) The 2022 Chablis Valmur Grand Cru, which was taken from tank where it will stay until February, is the final vintage before one significantly contributing parcel was pulled up. The perfumed bouquet has yellow plum and touches of pistachio, crushed stone and a touch of wild mint. The beautifully balanced palate has a velvety texture and a fine bead of acidity, very precise, with an utterly delectable persistent finish. One of Moreau's strongest cuvées (as usual) - not to be underestimated. More Info

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (96-96) Clear bright lemon, a powerful and high-class nose, in concentrated white fruit but with a fine sense of balance. This is textbook Vaudésir, a beautiful example, with all the necessary tension alongside a wealth of fruit. The oak is subdued. Fermented in tank then to barrel with no new wood in late March, with two glass wine globes. Crystalline at the finish. Drink from 2030-2040. Tasted: June 2023. More Info

Wine Advocate (97-99) My allegiance chez Dugat is almost always to the Griotte-Chambertin, but this year, it was the 2022 Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru that dominated in our tasting. Soaring from the glass with an incipiently complex bouquet of sweet berries, cherries and plums mingled with licorice and smoke, it's full-bodied, velvety and multidimensional, with a deep core of rich, vibrant, concentrated fruit framed by beautifully refined tannins, concluding with a long, saline finish. Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-95) One of the slightly darker purple colours, with a ripe and dark edged fruit. I sense the whole bunches more here than in the Clos Vougeot. Becomes more nuanced further back on the palate, with greater energy to the fruit. I was not sure from the nose but the palate works with a good balance between the slightly riper fruit profile and the acidity. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: October 2023. More Info

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (97) In bottle. Made as three cuvees, then assembled. A rich mid purple with a deliciously heady bouquet, the sumptuous side of dark raspberry, perfumed yet precise, purple fruit with some redder layers beneath, a little white pepper spice, multiple layers of fruit, very engaging with just a very slight youthful bitterness. Decanter (98) A tasting of each of the seven 2022 Musigny VV sub-sections and an approximate blend hint at a wine of almost voluptuous sensuality, with expressive mulberry and pomegranate fruit and hints of earth, smoke and liquorice that waft from the glass. The texture is powerfully tannic and dense but almost infinitely silky, and there is a dynamic interplay between the perfumed fruit and robust structure. Ideally, wait a decade before opening. Completely mouth filling with great charm, fills all the nooks and crannies. An excellent balance between the fruit acidity and tannins. Still going strong in my mouth several minutes later! Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94-97) The fine deep colour goes without saying. Immediate raspberry and strawberry fruit thrusts itself to the front. Fresh dark berries, less explosive than Clos Vougeot, all tightly wound with an impressive intensity. Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94-97) A rich deep purple, super saturated, with a bouquet to match. A full and firm structure with Thomas Collardot’s abundant fruit flowing over the top. A darker fruit with a blackberry note, but not the mulberry which would imply over-ripeness. The 20% whole bunch vinification adds an additional freshness, a slight salinity which works very well. Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (96-98) 5 Star Wine. A glowing fresh purple. Not reduction but just a mineral flinty top note above the fruit. Sitting back on its haunches but this lack of immediacy makes it even finer. All at the back of the palate and then additional waves come through thereafter, blue fruit indeed. Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (95-97) A bright pink edge to the purple. Very striking, very immediate, totally red fruit, very convincing essence of raspberry, with some ripe redcurrants behind. Fills the mouth, not quite the same intensity at the back as the Clos de la Roche but the Clos St-Denis does have quality finesse at the finish. Drink from 2030-2038. More Info

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (96-98) Rich dense purple. Gorgeously attractive if a little more restrained than the Clos St-Denis. Some of the traditional blueberry. So much in reserve. I prefer the weave of the texture here especially if keeping for the longer term. On the cusp of red and black fruit at the finish, and with excellent persistence. Drink from 2032-2040+. Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (95-97) A deep and vibrant ruby purple. This also has the seductive quality one wants but definitely is more precise, more subtle. There is a special backbone to this wine which makes it complete rather than just superficially attractive. This Charmes-Chambertin has a definite mineral finish. Drink from 2031-2040. Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-96) Fine mid purple. Two barrels, two producers, some Mazoyères mixed in. 100% new wood, grains fins. This also is pretty massive, though that perhaps hides the character of Charmes whereas it supports Clos Vougeot. Still, it is important to defend a little more extraction at a time when too many feet are being taken too far off the pedal. There is a light and unimportant toasty reduction, plus some of the sweet Charmes strawberry fruit, then a crunchy mineral note to the finish. A little bit dissociated at the moment but scored for its definite potential. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: November 2023. More Info
