Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne

After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.

Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.

"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-95) Tressage here, no tractor for years so as to avoid compacting the very light soil. One barrel, magnums only. Mid ruby with clearly a riper more perfumed style of fruit. Even a slight plum note to the perfume, then stonier and more saline on the palate. The fruit leaves a sweet impression in the mouth. Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-95) More crimson than purple, with notably more presence than the other Beaunes. A range of fruits finishing with some black cherry after the dark red berries, a heightened intensity of fruit, with an excellent balance between tannin and acidity, and notable length. Vinous (92-94) The 2022 Vosne-Romanée Les Petits-Monts 1er Cru has a taut, focused bouquet of black cherries and wild strawberry fruit, with a slight flintiness in the background. Very fine delineation here. The medium-bodied palate has a concentrated opening, fleshy and vibrant with blood orange-infused blueberry and raspberry fruit, then quite strict and peppery towards the finish. This represents a sterling follow-up to the impressive 2021 last year. More Info

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-96) A rich intense purple. The bouquet has the enhanced heady qualities I associate with Malconsorts. Some peonies perhaps, then a lush but stable fruit across the palate, with a wealth behind, which does indeed cover the tannins. Persistent. This Malconsorts is a firmly constructed wine with stable tannins, also the flesh to cover them. Drink from 2032-2040. Tasted: November 2023. More Info

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94-96) Bright purple. This is beautifully elegant, a lovely balance once again. Instead of being plump up at the front, this is all about the intensity at the back. Burghound (91-93) Moderate wood again frames the fresh and unusually expressive nose of forest floor, the sauvage and various wild red berries. There is impressive concentration to the powerful and tautly muscular medium-bodied flavors that display excellent length on the very firm finale where the only reproach is a touch of warmth. This is already attractively complex and a wine that should age gracefully over the next 12 to 15 years More Info

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (91-94) Faiveley pulled out quite a lot after the frost. There is still plenty left to make this wine, though. Solid red crimson colour, with a delicious red fruit nose with its mineral overlay. Alpine strawberries, fair concentration, very detailed, maybe just needs to kick on more at the finish. Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-95) The Les St Georges comes under the negociant label, Joseph Faiveley, as the produce of their own vines is mixed with two other sources, one of which is the Hospices de Nuits. A deep crimson colour. The bouquet is relatively luxurious, a super succulent ripe raspberry, with very good tension behind. This seems very young, but the abundant fruit and the structure are promising. The fruit on the palate is fresher than for the village Nuits. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: October 2023. More Info

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94-96) 100% new wood, to bottle in April. The wood comes from mixed forests, as Jean-Pierre thinks Tronçais doesn’t work here. A bright fresh crimson ruby. More floral more sensual, the early morning rose says Jean-Pierre. This is more quintessentially Vosne than the Brûlées, with a lifted and balanced flair, a mix of darked red fruits, avoiding the blacker side. White pepper spice becomes more apparent at the end. Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94-97) (5 Star Wine) Deep ruby crimson colour. At this end of the scale the power of the fruit and the vineyard character completely outweigh the vinification. 100% new wood (Tronçais) is invisible. Instead, we find the slaty and singed character of the vineyard, plus an astonishing wealth of fruit. A thickness of texture which is extraordinary. Vinous - Neal Martin (93-95) The 2022 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Saint-Georges 1er Cru has a very complex bouquet, a mix of red and black fruit, crushed flowers, and hints of spice coming through with aeration. This seems to "grow" in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with silky smooth tannins. It’s very pure, so pure that it almost disguises the backbone of this Les Saint-Georges, gaining depth towards the finish with touches of pain d'épice and white pepper. An excellent NSG that will repay cellaring. More Info

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94-96) (5 Star Wine) 30% new wood. Fresh mid purple. The bouquet is wonderfully lifted, Antoine explains they use a particularly light hand with this cuvee to avoid the potential austerity. The acidity is fine and the tannins are ripe, while there is still that clear backbone to the fruit which Vaucrains should have. Very persistent, and such high-class fruit. Drink from 2032-2040. Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94-97) A pleasing ruby colour. The bouquet shows the perfect match of Vosne hedonistic fruit with the extra weight of Nuits-St-Georges. Fruit floods the palate, dark raspberry, a light acidity, tannins submerged beneath the fruit, a light touch of oak, and remarkably persistent. Very fine indeed. Enjoy it because two thirds of the plot on 161/49 rootstock was taken out after the 2022 harvest. Drink from 2032-2040. More Info

Wafting from the glass with aromas of plums, cassis, orange zest and exotic spices and framed by a deft application of new oak, it's medium to full-bodied, concentrated and multidimensional, with terrific depth, velvety tannins and a long, broad finish. Vinous - Neal Martin (95-97) The 2022 Vosne-Romanée Aux Brûlées 1er Cru has a wonderful, expressive bouquet with shimmering red berry fruit, white flowers and hints of blood orange. Very harmonious and poised. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannins. It’s not powerful but tensile with an almost crystalline finish fanning out effortlessly. Superb. More Info

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-95) Clear bright ruby purple. The nose flickers in and out, and while there is a fine tensile line of red berry fruit, this is not too demonstrative. Perhaps some of the refined detail of an Echezeaux. A slight sucrosity of strawberry fruit, and very persistent. Very good and extremely typical of Suchots this year. Drink from 2030-2038. The finish continues gorgeously, this will make a beautiful bottle with a little patience. This Clos des Ursules shows the classic peacock’s fantail of aromatics. More Info

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (91-94) Medium deep crimson. The nose is very forthcoming, quite Chambolle in style which is not always the case with Baudes. On the palate one can find a bit more of the wilder more structured aspect of the proximity to Morey. A mix of fresher and darker red fruit, some tannins to finish. Drink from 2030-2036.
