Burgundy 2021 En Primeur
Our annual trip to the Cote d’Or to taste the new vintage is always a highlight of the year. This year felt extra special as travel restrictions that had kept us stuck at home were finally lifted. The 2021 was a reasonably brutal year in Burgundy, with numerous issues that have sadly hammered the production size significantly.
Plainly, 2021 will be a varied vintage and generalising it will be a difficult thing to do. Still, there are indeed some exceptional Pinot and Chardonnay examples that have triumphed over the dramatic vintage. Despite the challenges imposed by the weather, these wines saw a remarkable comeback to the classical style, with very moderate alcohol levels falling between 12.5 to 13.2%.

Vinous - Neal Martin (92-94)Due to the small market, the 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru is a blend of Poissenot, Les Cazetiers, Combe Aux Moins and Lavaux Saint-Jacques. This still amounted to just three casks! It has a well-defined, fragrant and floral bouquet that blossoms in the glass with hints of orange rind in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with a fine-boned structure. It's well-balanced and focused with a very harmonious and poised finish. Blending these vineyards together was the logical decision, but it has resulted in quite a wonderful wine. |

Vinous (89-91)The 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin Village is a blend of three parcels, though 50% is Au Combe de Dessus. With 20% new oak, it has an attractive wild strawberry and red plum bouquet. Impressive focus. The palate is medium-bodied with finely-tuned tannins, quite vibrant and lively, orange rind and touches of black pepper furnishing the finish. Give this a year or two in bottle. |

Jancis Robinson (18)Cask sample. Bright mid garnet. Sweet, jewelly, bright-fruited nose. Superior density and great fragrance. Real impact on the palate. Great persistence. Refined but not scrawny. Lifted and elegant on the nose with real breadth on the palate. Just gorgeous already even though one knows that it will just go on getting better and better. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-95)Domaine. Four barrels, one new, 25% whole bunch. Picked 28th September, so towards the end. A gorgeous glowing fresh crimson purple. A light reduction on the nose, but not enough to hide the fruit. An ethereal style of pinot with light cherry and alpine strawberry notes. Very enticing. Extremely harmonious all the way through. Quite lovely, with the whole bunches adding an extra note at the finish. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-95)Domaine Two barrels, one new and one one year old, destemmed entirely. Some of the vines date back to 1929. Mid crimson colour, fine weight of strawberry fruit, absolutely fills the middle of the mouth, with quite a persistent finish. Clearly their preferred wine of the two whereas I fractionally prefer Champeaux. Both are very good indeed in 2025. |
