Burgundy 2021 En Primeur
Our annual trip to the Cote d’Or to taste the new vintage is always a highlight of the year. This year felt extra special as travel restrictions that had kept us stuck at home were finally lifted. The 2021 was a reasonably brutal year in Burgundy, with numerous issues that have sadly hammered the production size significantly.
Plainly, 2021 will be a varied vintage and generalising it will be a difficult thing to do. Still, there are indeed some exceptional Pinot and Chardonnay examples that have triumphed over the dramatic vintage. Despite the challenges imposed by the weather, these wines saw a remarkable comeback to the classical style, with very moderate alcohol levels falling between 12.5 to 13.2%.
Careful selection is required for this vintage, and our buying team is pleased to provide more details and insider tips after a fruitful tasting week at Burgundy. Stay closely with us on this exciting campaign!

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90-92)Made from two-thirds Chaillots to one-third Lavières. 10% whole bunch. A full purple. The nose is a little less expressive than the Vosne Romanée but very typical of the appellation, plums and red berries together. There is a good depth of fruit behind, deepening further back on the palate, then a fresh finish with lively tannins and good acidity. Drink from 2026-2031. Tasted: December 2022 |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (89-92)Fullish yellow, some apples but riper here than the Coteaux Bourguignons. A little touch of oak, 25% new. This really comes into its own on the palate, still showing some oak and a bit of bacon fat but the ripe apples now give it plenty of flesh. Not mainstream but a thoroughly interesting wine. Picked a week before the reds. Drink from 2024-2027. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-94)Bottled yesterday! A vibrant fresh mid purple. Lots of energy too on the nose. Perhaps seems a little richer after yesterday’s bottling, which may have slightly muddied the waters - but this is clearly a good wine with plenty of dark red fruit and a good thread of acidity. The tannins are gentle. Drink from 2027-2033. Tasted: November 2022 |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (91-94)Being bottled today. A slightly darker colour here. There’s a good weight of a darker red berry fruit with a slight mentholated touch. The structure is more like a classical central Nuits-St-Georges, with both firmer tannins and a sound thread of acidity. The fruit continues very nicely behind. Drink from 2027-2034. Tasted: November 2022 |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-95)Still in barrel for a longer elevage. 35% new wood. A fine mid purple colour. Here the bouquet is interestingly complex after the pure precision of the Vaucrains. The fruit is of various ripenesses, thus including some darker berry notes. Rich and powerful, obviously not to the degree of a 2020, while there is still a light peppery touch to finish. However, the clay soils deliver an additional density here. Drink from 2029-2038. Tasted: November 2022 |

Burghound (88)A more deeply pitched and markedly earthier nose reveals notes of both red and dark currant along with a hint of the sauvage. The rich, velvety and caressing medium weight flavors are almost easy-going and delicate on the delicious and lightly structured finale. This delicious effort is definitely not a classic Nuits but it’s attractive all the same. |

Decanter (93)The dark mulberry and cassis fruit have a slightly rustic edge with lovely notes of cigar leaf, mineral, and earth. The texture is dense and tannic, yet there is an elegance as well brought by the fresh acidity that produces a lively feel on the palate and leads to a lingering finish. The grapes come from the 0.70-hectare domaine-owned parcel and are partially destemmed before gentle fermentation and ageing in cask (20% new). The overall effect is closer to the domaine’s wines in Vosne-Romanée, yet there is a touch of muscular Nuits style. |

Burghound (91-93)Ripe yet cool aromas include those of cassis, poached plum, an array of spice elements plus a whiff of the sauvage. The very rich and even bigger and more voluminous large-scaled flavors also brim with sappy dry extract before culminating in a balanced, powerful and lingering finish where a touch of bitter chocolate slowly emerges. This isn’t massive in the way that it usually is though it is borderline opulent, which is a descriptor I use very rarely with respect to the 2021 reds. |

Vinous (93-95)The 2021 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Pruliers 1er Cru has a very pure and generous bouquet with red cherries, crushed strawberry and minerals. Laser-like focus. The palate displays fine tannins, wonderful focused with a very precise, citrus-fresh finish. Lovely balance - a stylish Nuits Saint-Georges. |

Burghound (89-92)The proximity to Vosne is clear as the nose is overtly spicy with its array of various red berries and discreet wood and menthol influences. There is a bit more volume to the delicious and punchy if slightly less refined medium-bodied flavors that possess even better depth and persistence on the balanced finale. This is an excellent Nuits villages and worth your interest |

Vinous (90-92)The 2021 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos de l'Arlot Blanc 1er Cru, matured in 20% new oak, was taken from tank on the lees, due to be racked right after my visit. This is perfumed and seductive: wild peach with orange blossom and light blackcurrant leaf aromas, quite Meursault-like. The palate is well balanced with a fine citrus edge: orange pith and fresh pear, a touch of stem ginger, composed and harmonious on the finish. Delicious. |

Burghound (88-90)The is also very pretty with its array of cool and pure red, earth and soft spice nuances, all of which is trimmed in just enough wood to notice. The delicious, round and sappy middleweight flavors possess solid mid-palate concentration and a seductive texture before culminating in a bitter pit fruit and mildly austere finish. |
