Burgundy 2021 En Primeur
Our annual trip to the Cote d’Or to taste the new vintage is always a highlight of the year. This year felt extra special as travel restrictions that had kept us stuck at home were finally lifted. The 2021 was a reasonably brutal year in Burgundy, with numerous issues that have sadly hammered the production size significantly.
Plainly, 2021 will be a varied vintage and generalising it will be a difficult thing to do. Still, there are indeed some exceptional Pinot and Chardonnay examples that have triumphed over the dramatic vintage. Despite the challenges imposed by the weather, these wines saw a remarkable comeback to the classical style, with very moderate alcohol levels falling between 12.5 to 13.2%.
Careful selection is required for this vintage, and our buying team is pleased to provide more details and insider tips after a fruitful tasting week at Burgundy. Stay closely with us on this exciting campaign!

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (95-97)
From the Puligny side of the appellation. Clear beautiful yellow colour. The nose is discreet but very classy, then this huge wealth of fruit expands across the palate. We can wait for the nose. This is beautifully poised, a little wood, a slight youthful bitterness, but both add to the grip. Long and fine. Drink from 2028-2035. Tasted: October 2022(Maison) Louis Jadot Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2021 (3x75cl)
Inc. VAT: £1,412.04 -
Jancis Robinson (16)
Cask sample. Quite sweet and ripe on the nose. I’m not sure I would pick this as a Chablis blind! Really quite rich with a streak of green and it finishes rather suddenly. It certainly has weight… A big Chablis.(Maison) Louis Jadot Chablis 1er Cru Fourchaume 2021 (6x75cl)
Inc. VAT: £232.07 -
Jancis Robinson (16.5+)
Cask sample. Now this has breadth and weight but less obvious sweet ripeness. This really does have the nerve of a good Chablis, and impressive length.(Maison) Louis Jadot Chablis Grand Cru Blanchot 2021 (6x75cl)
Inc. VAT: £436.07 -
Jancis Robinson (17)
Cask sample. Some nerve and putty quality on the nose. Racy and lifted – more ethereal than the Blanchot. This should run and run and has real lift and purity. And great length.(Maison) Louis Jadot Chablis Preuses Grand Cru 2021 (6x75cl)
Inc. VAT: £436.07 -
Vinous (93-95)
The 2021 Chambertin Grand Cru offers a touch more complexity and nuance than the Clos-de-Bèze with red berry fruit, orange rind, crushed stone and wilted rose petals. It's a little more delineated and focused. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, again, quite creamy in texture with a bit of new oak on the finish (though there is a prudent use of new wood - one new barrel out of three). Quite seductive, this should age well in bottle, though afford it four to five years at least.(Maison) Louis Jadot Chambertin Grand Cru 2021 (3x75cl)
Inc. VAT: £2,018.04 -
Jancis Robinson (17.5++)
Cask sample. There is real weight and class here. Good freshness but depth and weight too. Long and dense. With more exciting nerve than in many other vintages. Correct interpretation of a rich grand cru with a fresh vintage. Persistent. Should age well.(Maison) Louis Jadot Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2021 (3x75cl)

Vinous (90-92)
The 2021 Puligny-Montrachet La Garenne 1er Cru has an attractive nose with touches of slate and a slight fumé scent that complements the malic aromas. This gains precision in the glass. The palate is well-balanced with a crisp bead of acidity. A stem ginger note hides in the background, whilst the finish feels reassuringly persistent. This should age well in bottle.(Maison) Louis Jadot Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru La Garenne 2021 (6x75cl)

Vinous (91-93)
The 2021 Volnay Clos de la Barre 1er Cru is well-defined on the nose with raspberry, cranberry and red plum. It's more withdrawn than the Santenots by comparison. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe dark berry fruit laced with white pepper and bay leaf. With impressive focus on the finish, this fans out nicely and suggests that it will age as well as the Santenots. Excellent.(Maison) Louis Jadot Volnay 1er Cru Clos de la Barre 2021 (6x75cl)

Vinous (91)
The 2021 Chablis La Moutonne Grand Cru is showing some reduction on the nose, although there seems to be some decent fruit behind it. The palate is well balanced with a fine thread of acidity, lemon zest and a touch of tangerine, lightly spiced towards the finish that fans out nicely. This is a decent effort in a difficult growing season. Tasted blind at the BIVB tasting in Chablis. -

Burghound (86-88)
Pretty, fresh and cool aromas include those of the essence of various red berries and a whiff of earth. The lilting and almost delicate lighter weight flavors exude a subtle minerality on the delicious, focused and very clean finish. This inviting effort should drink well youngAnne Gros Bourgogne Pinot Noir 2021 (6x75cl)

Vinous (90-92)
The 2021 Vosne-Romanée Les Barreaux offers dark berry fruit on the nose, a touch of wild thyme and hints of rosemary. The palate is smooth and caressing, fine tannins, redcurrant and wild strawberry with a dab of black pepper on the finish. One of the more successful wines from the Domaine - a treat. Four barrels produced. -
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (87-89)
A fine even purple. A nose of charm and delicious, adequately ripe, dark red fruit. Energetic fruit, with a touch of sandalwood, tightly wound with quite high acidity. Just slightly dry at the finish, though compensated by surprising length. Drink from 2024-2026.Arlaud Bourgogne Rouge Roncevie 2021 (6x75cl)

Vinous (91-93)
The 2021 Chambolle-Musigny Chatelots 1er Cru has an exquisitely-defined bouquet with shimmering red fruit bursting from the glass. The palate is very well balanced, the 30% whole bunches unnoticeable, sweet red fruit, kirsch and orange zest with a very plummy finish. Just one barrel produced. -
Vinous (94-96)
The 2021 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru is a little more "gourmand" on the nose, cohering with time in the glass, loamy, almost peaty aromas emerge with time. The palate is medium-bodied with finely-honed tannins. Lovely symmetry here, with a slight creaminess in texture towards the finish, where it feels very persistent. This is a lovely Charmes-Chambertin that should evolve wonderfully in bottle.Arlaud Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2021 (6x75cl)

Vinous (92-94)
The 2021 Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru, matured in 50% new oak, takes time to unfurl on the nose: brambly red fruit, undergrowth, just a touch of liquorice and sea spray. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, well-judged acidity, more open than previous vintages, supple and very pure on the finish. Wonderful. Four barrels produced - the maximum produced from their holding. -

Vinous - Neal Martin (90-92)
The 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes comes from three climats that are populated by 80- to 100-year-old vine cropped at 15hL/ha. It includes 50% whole bunches with central stems removed. It has a perfumed, incense and potpourri infused bouquet with exquisite delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with graphite infused red fruit, very harmonious with a tense, razor-sharp, mineral-driven finish. Excellent.
