Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Burghound (89-92)
(from the Brochon side). Exceptionally fresh if somber aromas include those of various red berries, newly turned earth and a touch of sauvage character. There is both fine richness and evident minerality suffusing the powerful middleweight flavors that are more firmly structured on the youthfully austere finale. This too is very good for its level though note that it’s clearly built-to-ageIn Bond£360.00 -

The 2022 Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaux Saint-Jacques 1er Cru has a perfumed bouquet, floral like the Vieilles Vignes, with scents of redcurrant, cranberry and sous-bois. However, there is much better delineation here, whilst the palate is cohesive and delineated. Taut and sapid towards the finish, this finely-made Lavaux Saint-Jacques should offer a decade's worth of drinking fulfillment. In Bond£417.50 -

The 2022 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Champeaux 1er Cru, which was bottled at the end of November, is a step-up from the Champerrier, with pretty brambly red fruit, sous-bois and light rose petal scents. The palate is medium-bodied, crisp and pure, with pliant tannins. There is palpable Pinoté here and a brisk, mineral-driven finish. This is worth seeking out. Tasted at merchants' 2022 Burgundy tastings in London. In Bond£387.50 -
Wine Advocate (93-96)
A brilliant wine in the making, Dauvissat's 2022 Chablis 1er Cru La Forest unfurls in the glass with youthfully reductive scents of citrus oil, crisp stone fruit, white flowers, oyster shell and subtle hints of orange blossom. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and incisive, with superb depth at the core and an electric finish, this cuvée has navigated the vintage's extremes with ease.In Bond£1,891.00 -

The 2022 Chablis 1er Cru Séchet unwinds in the glass with aromas of crisp stone fruits, ripe lemons, white flowers, clear honey and subtle hints of warm spices. Medium to full-bodied, cool and satiny, the vintage has lent this a gracious charm that isn't always typical of young Séchet, but the wine's searingly mineral signature remains front and center. In Bond£1,550.00 -

The 2022 Chablis Grand Cru Les Preuses unwinds in the glass with aromas of oyster shell, orange blossom, warm stones and subtle hints of citrus oil—this cuvée is almost always more about rocks than fruit. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and electric, it's racy and tensile, with a long, resonant finish. In Bond£3,000.00 -

Distinct shellfish notes. Plenty of volume, a fleshy sunny character on the palate, freshened by lingering salinity to finish. Top example of AP Chablis in 2022. From 40ha of vines, with three distinct plots, including one from a lovely vineyard to the east around Viviers, with vines planted in the 1960s, but all of the vines have plenty of age.In Bond£193.00 -

Located at the very start of Troesmes, 55 to 60 year old vines. Fine fresh lemon yellow. A clean and elegant fruit forward nose, lighter in style than most 1ers crus, hence its place in the line-up. Youthful bitters again, then a serene follow through, pure and precise. Fine elegant finish. Drink from 2026-2031. Tasted: June 2023.In Bond£1,000.00 -

A stunning example, with finesse allied to power. Real tension and energy here. Will be approachable quite young, but really should be aged for over five years for the best result. Fèvre has 2.24ha within Montée de Tonnerre. Plots are located in Pied d'Aloup (facing east) with profound Kimmeridgian soils bringing freshness, Chapelot facing south on deep soil adding richness, and Côte de Brechain facing west on top of the hill with the oldest plots dating back to 1936.In Bond£348.00 -

(5 Star wine) Clear lemon and lime colour. Just a very light coquillage reduction. Then the wine builds a beautiful level of intensity on the palate, a lime thread, very salivating for its dry finish. An impeccable balance, this is faultless. And so persistent! Nothing heavy, nothing over sunny. Drink from 2027-2035. Tasted: June 2023.In Bond£254.00 -

Mostly in Vaillons itself, with Chatains, Roncières and Mélinots. Another translucent pale lime colour. The nose is a little lighter than Montmains, very fine, lime and lemon notes throughout, it tastes as though filtered through a bed of tiny stones. Graceful and persistent. Drink from 2027-2034. Tasted: June 2023.In Bond£254.00 -

Fèvre has 3.65ha of Vaulorent. Situated on the grand cru hill rather than the Fourchaume slope, the soils here are characterised by lots of Kimmeridgian marl. Tight and tense, lots of energy here, powerful and precise and compensates with concentration and density more akin to Chablis Grand Cru. GIve this five years and it will be stunning. In Bond£338.00 -

Fresh pale green tint. Didier describes this as the entry level grand cru. The average age of the vines is at or above 60 years. There is admirable tension here, an electric start, more middleweight through the middle, then quite a powerful middle with decent dry extract, and good length. Keeps coming back. Drink from 2030-2040. Tasted: June 2023.In Bond£204.00 -

The very steep aspect of Côte Bouguerots is highlighted by a much greater emphasis on minerality than Fevre's Bougros. This is a grand cru is every way - so much drive on the palate with plenty of extract, concentration, salinity and length. Certain to keep very well but this is also surprisingly approachable early on. DIdier Seguier says it's likely to close down after 18-24 months but this is clearly a fine example with masses of potential. In Bond£323.00 -

(5 Star Wine) Mostly from old vines, a good half planted between 1948 and 1952. Translucent lemon and lime colour. The bouquet is not ready to unfurl yet there is a sense of sublime purity about the nose. A wine in perfect harmony on its wide bench of white fruit. Just a little touch of spice behind, good acidity. Sign up for this! Drink from 2032-2045.In Bond£250.00 -

Beautiful mix of richness, grace and drive. As always with Fèvre's Les Preuses, this is elegant, long-living and fine. Ultra-stylish and very mineral. From two sections of vines. One situated low down on Les Preuses next to Vincent Dauvissat's plot, on the flatter part facing south, the other on deeper soils, with both adding richness and totalling 2.5ha.In Bond£325.00 -
