Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Vinous - Neal Martin (95-97)The 2022 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru has a taut, delineated bouquet with crushed stone infusing the green apple and yellow plum fruit. Very focused and it gains intensity with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with a beautiful line of acidity that slices through the quite concentrated citrus fruit. The oak (two one-year-old barrels) remains politely in the background. It fans out wonderfully on the finish. Exquisite. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-95)A medium deep lemon yellow. A touch of class on the nose, suggesting the depth of fruit to follow on the palate. Quite complex, a little ripe citrus as well as the more conventional fruits. Ripe lemon peel; can be found on the palate as well which is agreeably juicy as well as profound, with a little sandalwood from the oak. A notably long finish. Fine plus. |

Wine Advocate (92-94)The 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru La Maltroie is another one of the standouts in the range, offering up aromas of citrus zest, mint, crisp green apple, white flowers and freshly baked bread, followed by a medium to full-bodied, satiny and fleshy palate that's suave, seamless and penetrating. |

Vinous (91-93)The 2022 Fixin En Combe Roy contains 50% stems, which loom over the current aromatics: dark berry fruit, cola, cracked black pepper and a faint wild fennel aroma. Very complex. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins and gentle grip. More tertiary in style, a little "gawkier" (if you can call an unfinished wine that), that it will certainly cohere during its élevage. It will require 3-4 years in bottle, but this is another very promising Fixin. |
