Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Indulge in the elegant intricacies of Jerome Recchione Gevrey-Chambertin Creux Brouillard 2022. An exquisite Pinot Noir hailing from the esteemed vineyards of Burgundy, France, this vintage is a testament to Recchione's meticulous dedication to his craft. Harvested from premier cru vineyards, the grapes undergo traditional open vat fermentation before aging in French oak barrels, a method that imparts a distinctive complexity to the wine's profile. The wine mesmerises with a bouquet of cherry and blackcurrant, the undercurrents of forest floor and spices render it superbly multidimensional. It possesses a splendid balance of supple tannins and vibrant acidity, culminating in a lengthy, gratifying finish. A standout expression of fine Burgundian winemaking, Jerome Recchione Gevrey-Chambertin Creux Brouillard 2022 offers a divine blend of power and grace, an indulgence for any wine connoisseur to savour. |

Vinous - Neal Martin (91-93)The 2022 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru comes from estate and purchased fruit, five or six different sources blended during vinification, and includes around 35% whole bunches. The bright bouquet offers dark cherries, wild strawberries, and hints of wild heather and sea spray. The medium-bodied palate has pliant tannins, is quite harmonious, and has more dark fruit toward the finish, laced with dark chocolate and brown spices. Very fine. |

Burghound (89-91)Outstanding. Moderate reduction renders the nose tough to assess today. Otherwise there is good freshness and tension to the solidly concentrated and delineated medium-bodied flavors that exude a more subtle minerality on the firmly austere but not really rustic finale. Good stuff and worth checking out plus it will age. |

Vinous - Neal Martin (93-95)The 2022 Corton-Pougets Grand Cru has a tightly wound bouquet with dark plum, raspberry coulis, incense and light sous-bois scents. It takes quite a few swirls of the glass to get the aromas going. The palate is medium-bodied with a structured, assertive opening. The tannins are slightly chalky, lending this Corton-Pougets edginess/nerve. Fine mineralité towards the finish yet tightly wound and almost curmudgeonly in its nascent state, this Grand Cru will demand long-term agin |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (91-94)Medium deep crimson. The nose is very forthcoming, quite Chambolle in style which is not always the case with Baudes. On the palate one can find a bit more of the wilder more structured aspect of the proximity to Morey. A mix of fresher and darker red fruit, some tannins to finish. Drink from 2030-2036. Tasted: October 2023. |

Vinous - Neal Martin (93-95)The 2022 Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses 1er Cru showed more reduction on the nose compared to the Bonnes-Mares: brambly red fruit, Earl Grey, and light forest floor aromas blossom in the glass. Fine delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with plush tannins, velvety smooth with maraschino cherries, marmalade and touches of fresh fig. This is quite exotic towards the finish. By direct comparison, the aforementioned Grand Cru has a little more composure and restraint and perhaps handled the warmth of the growing season better. Still, it's a lovely Amoureuses. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-95)Frédéric Barnier notes that Fuées does not suffer in the dry years whereas the clay in Baudes can block the water supply. A clear pure crimson purple. The nose has charm and elegance with fruit on the palate better balanced than Baudes. It is not a hugely demonstrative wine, but there is a coherent elegance throughout. Drink from 2030-2037. Tasted: October 2023 |

Vinous - Neal Martin (95-97)The 2022 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru absolutely delivers on the nose from the very first sniff: complex mineral-driven red berry fruit, exquisitely defined, takes it up another level from the Lavaux Saint-Jacques. The palate is beautifully balanced with finely chiseled tannins. Poised yet powerful, it fans effortlessly toward the immensely detailed and beguiling finish. Jadot has stepped up a gear in terms of its Clos Saint-Jacques in recent vintages (for example, the 2019), and this will give the likes of Rousseau and Clair a run for their money. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (91-93)Quite pale in colour, not abnormal for Estournelles. The bouquet is quite delicate but the fruit in the mouth is properly refined. This is a wine that creeps up on you rather than impresses at first sight. Drink from 2029-2035. Tasted: October 2023. |

Vinous (90-92)The 2022 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Prieur 1er Cru has a fresh, well-defined bouquet with plenty of energy and open, expressive raspberry and redcurrant aromas. The palate is balanced with a slightly savory opening and hints of black pepper. Whilst not powerful, the finish conveys elegance. |

Vinous (89-91)The 2022 Gevrey-Chambertin Cuvée Alexandrine has the most floral bouquet of the three tasted from Roy, red fruit commingling with subtle mocha scents and brown spices. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, again, just a tad savory in style, finishing with a dab of spice. This should drink well for several years, possibly more. |
