Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Burghound (88-91)(from Les Condemennes, Les Athets and Les Babillières). A more floral-suffused nose speaks mostly of spicy red and dark raspberry scents. The supple lighter weight flavors possess an attractive mouthfeel and evident minerality that adds a sense of lift to the youthfully austere and impressively long if mildly tangy finish. |

Decanter (95)The delicious Corton Bressandes has long been a favourite in this cellar. It is produced from a large (0.80 hectare) parcel that Pacalet rents, planted with 80-year-old massale selection vines at very high density. The vines give a small yield but very concentrated fruit that Pacalet ferments gently as whole clusters to deliver this intense, powerful wine that retains surprising elegance and finesse for such a substantial wine. The ripe mulberry and plum fruit aromas are hedged with earth and savoury game notes; the texture is tannic and compact. This Bressandes should open in five to seven years and drink well for decades. |

The Pierre Girardin Montrachet Grand Cru 2022 is a remarkable expression of French wine craftsmanship. Crafted in the heart of Burgundy's prestigious Côte de Beaune sub-region, this sumptuous Chardonnay is the work of Pierre Girardin - a young, meticulous winemaker from a long lineage of vignerons. This Grand Cru's unmatched intensity, elegance, and freshness are a testament to Girardin's skilful hand and the extraordinary terroir of Montrachet. The vineyards, planted on marl and chalk soil, imbue the grapes with distinct minerality and complexity. This exceptional vintage exudes aromas of lemon, honeysuckle, and toasted almonds. On the palate, it offers opulent fruit intensity balanced by refreshing acidity and an enduring chalky finish. The Pierre Girardin Montrachet Grand Cru 2022's incomparable balance, depth and precision make it an unparalleled example of Burgundy's finest Chardonnay. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90-93)Medium deep purple, the most complex of the three. Cherry in the foreground, red berries behind. The fruit soars to the back of the palate, filling the mouth, a light but adequate acidity, and tannins which are well ripened. Then another surge of fruit to finish. Drink from 2029-2035. Tasted: November 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (89-91)From five plots. Fresh and quite deep purple. Not much nose at first and then some flowers emerge, including the traditional violets. There are tannins behind, this still needs to resolve, but there is plenty of wine with good acidity behind. Drink from 2028-2034. Tasted: November 2023. |

Vinous (91-93)The 2022 Corton-Perrières Grand Cru contains 70% whole bunches this year. It has a perfumed, very floral bouquet with violets and iris flowers. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fresh and slightly chalky in texture. This feels focused and quite persistent on the finish. It is very promising and certainly a step up from the 2021. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94-98)Two barrels made. A glowing pale lemon and lime colour. Though the barrels are not new they still lend a touch of coconut to this sublimely opulent Montrachet. The riches are properly balanced on the palate though, with waves of perfectly ripe fruit sweeping through the mouth. Some tropical notes, and lower in acidity to taste, thanks to the power of the fruit. Drink from 2030-2040. Tasted: November 2023. |
