Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

One new barrel in two, 80% whole bunch vinification. Mid crimson red. Quite a dense bouquet, even a little spicy. Brisk red, raspberry and cherry, with a fine depth of flavour and notable persistence. Some Vosne style headiness with Nuits-St-Georges depth. Drink from 2030-2038. From both sides of the village, all destemmed, still in barrel, 20% new wood. Dark in colour with a suggestion of reduction on the nose. An even medium deep fruit on the palate, dark raspberry, quite elegant even, and certainly a clean finish. Drink from 2028-2034. Tasted: December 2023.In Bond£280.00 -
Burghound (88-90)
(this includes the fruit from the domaine’s .6 ha parcel of Au Bas de Combe as well as fruit from Les Lavières and the villages portion of Aux Grandes Vignes). Here the expressive nose blends hints of cassis and red berry liqueur with those of soft spice and newly turned earth. There is a lovely texture to the solidly concentrated medium weight flavors that also conclude in a firm, mildly warm and serious but not especially rustic or youthfully austere finishIn Bond£485.00 -
(3x75cl) 2022
Burghound (90-93)
(from a .73 ha parcel of 40+ year old vines). A deft application of wood sets off the markedly ripe yet still nicely fresh nose of poached plum, black cherry liqueur and warm earth. As one would reasonably expect, there is better volume and density to the more powerful medium-bodied flavors that are at once rich and caressing before terminating in a palate soaking, very firm and sneaky long finish. Lovely and a wine that should be approachable after only 5-ish years yet easily reward a decade plus of cellaringIn Bond£390.00 -

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (91-93)
A rich deep purple. At the moment, I am finding that the oak is playing too strong a hand, rather dumbing down the fruit which is certainly there. 45% new wood is not in itself excessive, but it makes the fruit darker and heavier. There is plenty of fruit weight here so this may be a severe rating. Drink from 2030-2036. Tasted: December 2023.In Bond£580.00 -

A full dark purple, again bolstered by the barrel. Dark fruit, which maintains an even presence across the palate. This one does not fade in the middle as some Suchots can do. A fine long balanced finish. Drink from 2030-2037. Tasted: December 2023.In Bond£580.00 -

Medium deep ruby. A restrained nose, quiet juicy dark fruit on the palate, once again plumper than the Sirugue equivalents. Fills the mouth attractively, albeit still with a couple of barrel tannins evident at the finish. Drink from 2028-2034. Tasted: December 2023.In Bond£395.00 -

The delicious Corton Bressandes has long been a favourite in this cellar. It is produced from a large (0.80 hectare) parcel that Pacalet rents, planted with 80-year-old massale selection vines at very high density. The vines give a small yield but very concentrated fruit that Pacalet ferments gently as whole clusters to deliver this intense, powerful wine that retains surprising elegance and finesse for such a substantial wine. The ripe mulberry and plum fruit aromas are hedged with earth and savoury game notes; the texture is tannic and compact. This Bressandes should open in five to seven years and drink well for decades. In Bond£3,600.00 -

Pacalet's village Vosne is a delight, with a lovely, forward blackberry fruit expression with hints of violets and earth. The texture is firmly tannic but supple enough to suggest that it will drink well reasonably young and a finish that lingers luminously. The grape sources have evolved a bit – he now cites Au-dessus de la Rivière at the base of the slope and le Barreaux and La Combe Brûlée at the top. The grapes are mainly fermented as whole clusters without sulphur until bottling, and the wine ages two winters in cask, primarily used.In Bond£1,620.00 -
