Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Vinous - Neal Martin (88-90)The 2022 Chambolle-Musigny Village comes from several lieux-dits and includes more whole bunches than previous vintages - 60%. That does dominate the aromatics at the moment and covers some of the terroir expression. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins. It is lightly spiced, somehow just a little conservative towards the finish, where it needs to muster a little more complexity. But it will drink well for 8-10 years. |

Burghound (90-93)An overtly floral and markedly spicy nose is quite restrained if exceptionally pretty with its cool array of red and blue pinot fruit scents laced with hints of orange peel and herbal tea. Here too the middleweight flavors possess a lovely texture as well as a subtle minerality that adds a sense of lift to the well-delineated, balanced and dusty finish that is sneaky long. Lovely and very Chambolle in character. |

Burghound (88-91)(from Les Condemennes, Les Athets and Les Babillières). A more floral-suffused nose speaks mostly of spicy red and dark raspberry scents. The supple lighter weight flavors possess an attractive mouthfeel and evident minerality that adds a sense of lift to the youthfully austere and impressively long if mildly tangy finish. |

The Moron-Garcia Corton Baie Par Baie 2022 is a splendid dedication to the French winemaking tradition, originating from the prized vineyards of Burgundy. Its creator, Moron-Garcia, utilises strict selection, baie par baie (berry by berry), a meticulous approach which contributes to its remarkable quality. Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92)Pale colour with a lime tint. The bouquet indicates some power but no detail, as yet. Lush white fruit with a slightly honeyed note, continues well across the palate, a little toast and just enough acidity. The aftertaste continues quite well, while showing the riper aspects. Drink from 2028-2036. Tasted: October 2023. |

Decanter (95)The delicious Corton Bressandes has long been a favourite in this cellar. It is produced from a large (0.80 hectare) parcel that Pacalet rents, planted with 80-year-old massale selection vines at very high density. The vines give a small yield but very concentrated fruit that Pacalet ferments gently as whole clusters to deliver this intense, powerful wine that retains surprising elegance and finesse for such a substantial wine. The ripe mulberry and plum fruit aromas are hedged with earth and savoury game notes; the texture is tannic and compact. This Bressandes should open in five to seven years and drink well for decades. |

Decanter (97)Nicolas Groffier has done a superb job with his Amoureuses; he will separate the upper and lower parts in 2022. Just under Musigny, he explains, there is a lot of sand, which helps the vines ripen to a greater degree. This cuvée has a black plum and cassis fruit character with notes of earth and smoke. The texture is fuller and more powerful, with great ripeness and depth. One should wait seven to ten years to open this monumental wine and drink over the next thirty. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (95-98)The recipe for both 2022 Amoureuses wines is 30% new wood and 100% whole bunches. The Grâce des Argiles comes from the bottom section of the vineyard, grown on red clay. A solid rich bouquet yet absolutely with its seductive charm. A velvet covering on a big frame with a delicious richness of fruit without losing the precision of the year. A superb fruit weight, yet with energy from a sufficiently mineral acidity to finish. Drink from 2030-2040+. |

Vinous (91-93)The 2022 Corton-Perrières Grand Cru contains 70% whole bunches this year. It has a perfumed, very floral bouquet with violets and iris flowers. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fresh and slightly chalky in texture. This feels focused and quite persistent on the finish. It is very promising and certainly a step up from the 2021. |
