Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Introducing a distinguished white wine, the Domaine de la Cras Bourgogne Coteaux de Dijon Cras Chardonnay 2022. Tucked into stunning French viniculture regions, Domaine de la Cras offers expressive wines, rooted deeply in the terroir of the Coteaux de Dijon. This Chardonnay blend highlights the true character of Burgundy with its distinct minerality and balanced acidity. Matured in French oak barrels, the 2022 vintage boasts a desirable mix of ripe tropical fruit flavours complemented by a vibrant lemon zest. Subtle undertones of vanilla and butterscotch lend complexity on the finish, making it an exemplary representation of Burgundy Chardonnay's charm. Domaine de la Cras follows natural winemaking principles, producing environmentally-conscious wines while preserving artisanal traditions. As a certified organic vineyard, they foster biodiversity, cultivating vines on clay-limestone soils which impart richness and depth into the Domaine de la Cras Bourgogne Coteaux de Dijon Cras Chardonnay 2022. |

Wine Advocate (90-92)Derived almost exclusively from lieu-dit Les Draze, the 2022 Chambolle-Musigny Village wafts from the glass with aromas of red berries, cherries, rose petals and baking spices. Medium to full-bodied, deep and pure, with a concentrated core of fruit framed by sweet tannins, it's showing especially well. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-95)From the usual four vineyards. Deep crimson. The bouquet has quite an elegant style even if the individual fruits are not yet quite with us. Quite a firm structure behind but sitting well with the deep red fruit. Balanced and stylish, with good ageing potential. Drink from 2031-2038. Tasted: November 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-94)Glowing purple. There is a fine weight of fruit, building steadily, lifting deep cherry notes, with an excellent texture, serge not silk, but it provides a fine backbone. I can see this ageing into a classic Dujac village Morey, always one of Burgundy’s great village wines. Drink from 2030-2037. Tasted: November 2023. |

Decanter (95)Duroché has two cuvées of Lavaut; Pierre takes enough of the oldest vines (planted in 1923) to cull out a single barrel for a 'Vieilles Vignes' cuvée. If you can't find that, this wine will do nicely with its dark blackberry fruit and floral notes, silky texture, refreshingly crisp freshness, and tannic grip. This delicious wine should show well shortly after release but can undoubtedly be cellared for a decade or more if you can avoid drinking it now. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90-93)A substantial cuvée from multiple plots. Fresh bright purple. Concentrated raspberry and bilberry, good acidity, no more than medium bodied but still with energy, redcurrant and raspberry jam behind. Drink from 2028-2033. Tasted: November 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (91-94)Planted in 1953, with tiny berries on the vines. Rich purple, dark berries on the nose, glossy fruit, nearer to raw than super ripe, fine even fruit across the palate, a little touch of acidity, still so youthful. Drink from 2028-2034. Tasted: November 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (87-90)Mature vines in the lower central part of Grèves, with all bunches destemmed, two weeks cuvaison, 35% new wood, still in barrel, bottling expected in March. Crimson red, a rather sombre nose, lacks life. The oak is currently much too powerful and slightly dries the wine. Dark red fruit some spice, and a touch of liquorice, but with a slightly bitter finish. In a difficult place at the moment. Tasted: November 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-96)Fine mid purple. Two barrels, two producers, some Mazoyères mixed in. 100% new wood, grains fins. This also is pretty massive, though that perhaps hides the character of Charmes whereas it supports Clos Vougeot. Still, it is important to defend a little more extraction at a time when too many feet are being taken too far off the pedal. There is a light and unimportant toasty reduction, plus some of the sweet Charmes strawberry fruit, then a crunchy mineral note to the finish. A little bit dissociated at the moment but scored for its definite potential. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: November 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94-96)5 barrels, two from Petit Maupertuis destemmed, three others which are in new barrels and with 100% whole bunch vinification. The Clos Vougeot is very reductive at first, though this starts to blow off. There is a huge volume of fruit though and the two halves seem to marry up. Actually, rather an astonishing weight of fruit at the back of the palate. Definitely a Vin de Garde. This still needs more elevage but is very promising. Drink from 2032-2040. Tasted: November 2023. |
