Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne

After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.

Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.

"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-96) A fine deep purple, with brilliance. The bouquet has the energy which we expect with that extra note of headiness. The Malconsorts opens out gorgeously and is kept fresh by a good thread of acidity. Pure, long, fine, lifted, medium plus bodied but there is a little bit of majesty here nonetheless. Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-96) (5 Star Wine) First we tasted the component parts. (1) Young vines from 1980s. A deep concentrated purple. Lesser foliage in the hot dry summer has concentrated the colour and other aspects, giving a dark style of fruit as well, with a nutty finish, but good acidity. (2) A blend, mainly from plot #3 and a bit of #1. Mid purple in colour, less demonstrative on the nose. A much suppler style of fruit, less forceful acidity, fine length, more typical Epenots here. (3) Old vines, 90+ years old: A deep glowing purple. A little more intensity, a gorgeous quality of deep red fruit, just a touch tougher in its tannins, plus the acidity. (4) Press wine: dark purple, powerful rather than fine on the nose, more volatile, but could be useful in the blend. Sweet thick dark red to black fruit. Chunky stuff. And now the blend: A deep purple colour with only a very slightly lighter rim. The bouquet suggests poise as the fruit has melded together harmoniously. On the palate this is, as almost always, a much more complete wine than the individual parts. The wine seems to push down deeper while retaining all the class of the very best components. We are approaching the cusp of red and black fruit, the acidity is perfectly harnessed and the tannins are fine grained. Potentially a very fine Clos des Epeneaux. Drink from 2032-2040+. Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (91-93) Six barrels, two of them new. A medium to bright purple. The nose is invigorating with as little as 10% whole bunches, enough to add a floral note. This is lively on the palate, a Fremiets which has remembered it is in Volnay, not Pommard, delightfully stylish at the finish. Drink from 2032-2037. Tasted: October 2023. More Info

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (95-98) Planned to pull out 30% of the holding, but in the end 40% made more sense. So there is just 60% left of old virused vines. Hence only 3.5 barrels. Bright mid purple. The bouquet has a delicious, lifted, velvety red fruit. Floral and seductive, entirely red fruit, nothing black, so not too ripe, and with abundant energy. Vinous (92-94) The 2022 Vosne-Romanée Les Petits-Monts 1er Cru has a taut, focused bouquet of black cherries and wild strawberry fruit, with a slight flintiness in the background. Very fine delineation here. The medium-bodied palate has a concentrated opening, fleshy and vibrant with blood orange-infused blueberry and raspberry fruit, then quite strict and peppery towards the finish. This represents a sterling follow-up to the impressive 2021 last year. More Info

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-96) A rich intense purple. The bouquet has the enhanced heady qualities I associate with Malconsorts. Some peonies perhaps, then a lush but stable fruit across the palate, with a wealth behind, which does indeed cover the tannins. Persistent. This Malconsorts is a firmly constructed wine with stable tannins, also the flesh to cover them. Drink from 2032-2040. Tasted: November 2023. More Info

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (91-93) 80 year old vines in clay soil, a vineyard run by the Delaunay team. Destemmed 36% new wood, all destemmed. Dark crimson purple. The Chaponnières has a lovely bouquet of dense ripe cherries and a good fruit acid balance, I find this wine altogether livelier and more interesting than the Beaune Grèves. Drink from 2028-2035. Burghound (91-93) Once again moderate wood is present on the more floral-infused nose of bright cherry, spice and exotic tea scents. The refined but quite punchy medium weight flavors exude a bracing salinity on the mildly austere, tension-filled and beautifully long finish. This is refined but it’s not necessarily a Charmes of lace and grace as focused power lurks in the background and thus some forbearance is in order More Info

Vinous - Neal Martin (92-94) The 2022 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Damodes 1er Cru is aged in 50% new oak and completely de-stemmed. This is pleasingly floral on the nose, with wilted roses filtering through the raspberry and redcurrant fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins and a keen line of acidity. This is very elegant in style, with a composed and transparent finish. What a lovely Les Damodes from Faiveley. More Info

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-95) The Les St Georges comes under the negociant label, Joseph Faiveley, as the produce of their own vines is mixed with two other sources, one of which is the Hospices de Nuits. A deep crimson colour. The bouquet is relatively luxurious, a super succulent ripe raspberry, with very good tension behind. This seems very young, but the abundant fruit and the structure are promising. The fruit on the palate is fresher than for the village Nuits. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: October 2023. More Info

Vinous - Neal Martin (93-95) The 2022 Chambolle-Musigny Les Carrières 1er Cru has a lovely bouquet that completely subsumes the 100% new oak, whilst the 80% whole bunches imparts discrete white pepper and bay leaf notes that enhance the red fruit. The medium-bodied palate is very tensile and focused with finely chiseled tannins and a vibrant, lightly spiced finish with a touch of curry leaf on the aftertaste. Excellent. More Info

Vinous - Neal Martin (94-96) This year, the 2022 Chambolle-Musigny Les Charmes 1er Cru includes 50% whole bunches. The nose is refined and composed - perhaps the most mineral-driven and complex, with fabulous delineation. The medium-bodied palate has filigree tannins, perfectly judged acidity, and silky smooth with a perfectly poised finish. Sophisticated and tensile thanks to the limestone soils, this is a great Chambolle in the making. More Info

Vinous - Neal Martin (91-93) The 2022 Chambolle-Musigny Aux Combottes 1er Cru comes from vines up to 70 years old. It has a very expressive bouquet with pure black cherry, tayberry fruit, crushed stone, and light forest floor scents. The medium-bodied palate has good concentration with a mixture of red and black fruit. The new oak is a little dominant towards the finish - it's one cuvée where I feel that less would have revealed the elegance that is here. Let's see how this ages and absorbs the oak. More Info
