Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne

After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.

Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.

"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Vinous (92-94) The 2022 Vosne-Romanée Les Petits-Monts 1er Cru has a taut, focused bouquet of black cherries and wild strawberry fruit, with a slight flintiness in the background. Very fine delineation here. The medium-bodied palate has a concentrated opening, fleshy and vibrant with blood orange-infused blueberry and raspberry fruit, then quite strict and peppery towards the finish. This represents a sterling follow-up to the impressive 2021 last year. More Info

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-96) A rich intense purple. The bouquet has the enhanced heady qualities I associate with Malconsorts. Some peonies perhaps, then a lush but stable fruit across the palate, with a wealth behind, which does indeed cover the tannins. Persistent. This Malconsorts is a firmly constructed wine with stable tannins, also the flesh to cover them. Drink from 2032-2040. Tasted: November 2023. More Info

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (95-97) A deep and vibrant ruby purple. This also has the seductive quality one wants but definitely is more precise, more subtle. There is a special backbone to this wine which makes it complete rather than just superficially attractive. This Charmes-Chambertin has a definite mineral finish. Drink from 2031-2040. Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94-97) Fresh colour, lemon and lime, not massive at all in bouquet but I am learning not to expect that chez Sauzet. A broad beamed intensity on the palate, this almost seems uncouth after the Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet, but it still has its finesse. A light oatmeal touch from young (but not new) wood, and a great deal in reserve. A fine and impressive wine, though unlike in most cellars in 2022, I am leaning towards the Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet today. But this will definitely work! Drink from 2030-2040. Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (95-98) A pure clear lemon colour. The extra weight of Montrachet is indeed apparent on the nose. Ripe pears. Perhaps this is a little less in the Sauzet style, not being from their own fruit, but it is impressive. The weight on the palate is profound, with certainly ripe fruit but also a point of minerality right in the middle, and good acidity. Almost a wine to eat rather than drink. It does indeed have the requisite very long finish. Drink from 2032-2045. Tasted: October 2023. More Info

James Suckling (97-98) Mind-blowingly deep and subtle nose of stone fruit with citrusy nuances. All the density of Batard, but with such elegance at the extremely long, focused finish. Great potential! From old vines purchased in 2008. More Info

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94-97) Mid lemon yellow. Some delicacy, without disputing the imminent power. A pure bench of fresh white fruit, actually this is more about nuances than power, though it maintains energy all the way through, to a fine long finish. Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-95) The Les St Georges comes under the negociant label, Joseph Faiveley, as the produce of their own vines is mixed with two other sources, one of which is the Hospices de Nuits. A deep crimson colour. The bouquet is relatively luxurious, a super succulent ripe raspberry, with very good tension behind. This seems very young, but the abundant fruit and the structure are promising. The fruit on the palate is fresher than for the village Nuits. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: October 2023. More Info

Vinous (94-96) The 2022 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru has an almost clinical bouquet with more penetration than the Criots served alongside. The medium-bodied palate has fine tension, but there is a real delicacy about this Bâtard with a very persistent, controlled finish and hints of white peach on the aftertaste. Wonderful. More Info

Vinous (95-97) The 2022 Montrachet Grand Cru is the only cuvée in two one-year-old barrels. I don't think it needs new oak. There is real energy and complexity here, orange pith and lemon verbena, touches of lemon curd. The palate is beautifully balanced with great depth and power, far more than the Bâtard-Montrachet. It has a beguiling length and precision, velvety smooth, with a hint of walnut on the finish. Divine. More Info

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (95-98) 100% mixed forests, to bottle in April. Fine mid purple. The nose is not so drop dead stunning as the Clos Vougeot but it is still impressive, and then the palate delivers yet more. Some rose petals, some vibrant deep red fruit, chiselled and intense at the same time, nuanced without latticework. Then a firm structure. Looks like becoming a great wine but under the cosh from the Clos Vougeot this year. But there is a breadth of fruit here nonetheless. Drink from 2030-2040. Tasted: November 2023. More Info

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94-96) 100% new wood, to bottle in April. The wood comes from mixed forests, as Jean-Pierre thinks Tronçais doesn’t work here. A bright fresh crimson ruby. More floral more sensual, the early morning rose says Jean-Pierre. This is more quintessentially Vosne than the Brûlées, with a lifted and balanced flair, a mix of darked red fruits, avoiding the blacker side. White pepper spice becomes more apparent at the end. Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94-97) (5 Star Wine) Deep ruby crimson colour. At this end of the scale the power of the fruit and the vineyard character completely outweigh the vinification. 100% new wood (Tronçais) is invisible. Instead, we find the slaty and singed character of the vineyard, plus an astonishing wealth of fruit. A thickness of texture which is extraordinary. Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (95-98) A glowing pale yellow. Super-concentrated if not yet very yielding bouquet. Extra tension here, certainly some depth, but perhaps more in class than power. That will change with time – the class with remain but the depth will expand. White fruit, tension, some youthful bitters, but keeping itself to itself for the moment. Really very long finish though. The nose speaks a little of its oak and a lot of its fruit, a riper style of red berries, yet with good acidity behind, indeed quite fresh at the finish after a slight heaviness up front. Vinous (93-95) The 2022 Meursault Clos Richemont 1er Cru is a dense, opulent white built on texture more than anything else. It is one of the most overt wines in the Boillot range. Orange jam, spice, vanillin, lemon confit and baked apple tart infuse the 2022 with tons of textural intensity. This is such a distinctive wine. More Info

Vinous (94-96) The 2022 Meursault Les Genevrières 1er Cru is a complex, dynamic wine. I especially admire its focus. Pear, slate, crushed rocks, mint and white pepper all hover across the palate in a Meursault that marries fruit richness with layers of depth and explosive energy. In other words, classic Genevrières. The 2022 is quite reticent today, but I take that as a positive sign for the future. What a gorgeous wine this is. More Info

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (95-98) 1.5 barrels. Fullish yellow with ripe fruit, a touch of bacon fat along with Jerusalem artichokes. As well as the beautiful quality of fruit there is a saline touch. Certainly complex, not monstrously massive, showing more today than the Bâtard but there is correspondingly even more to come. Vinous - Neal Martin (93-95) The 2022 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Saint-Georges 1er Cru has a very complex bouquet, a mix of red and black fruit, crushed flowers, and hints of spice coming through with aeration. This seems to "grow" in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with silky smooth tannins. It’s very pure, so pure that it almost disguises the backbone of this Les Saint-Georges, gaining depth towards the finish with touches of pain d'épice and white pepper. An excellent NSG that will repay cellaring. More Info

The bouquet is wonderfully lifted, Antoine explains they use a particularly light hand with this cuvee to avoid the potential austerity. The acidity is fine and the tannins are ripe, while there is still that clear backbone to the fruit which Vaucrains should have. Very persistent, and such high-class fruit. Drink from 2032-2040.
