Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-95)Four barrels made, one new and one each from the three preceding years. A clear pale lemon colour. The opulence of the vineyard shows in a controlled manner on the palate. A little oak shows but it is classy. As with Chartron’s other wines, there is a complementary acidity which helps the balance. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: October 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (95-98)A full primrose yellow. The bouquet is sturdier here, surprisingly, after the pure white fruit Bâtard. However, the chiselled elegance of Chevalier shows much more on the palate, where there is an impressive, if initially restrained, intensity and a second wave of flavour further back on the palate. This will be particularly fine and the aftertaste is notably persistent. A very long finish indeed. Drink from 2030-2040. Tasted: October 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-95)Five barrels. Fresh lemon and lime. A very pure clean white fruit on the palate. More perfumed than mineral at the outset. A generous concentrated white fruit across the palate, ripe apples in particular, well backed by its oak, with good length too. To bottle in April 2024. Drink from 2029-2037. Tasted: October 2023. |

Jancis Robinson (17.5)Cask sample. Subtle first impression. Ripe citrus and spice but impressionistic. As it opens, there's a rich creaminess. Rounded and full in the mouth. An unusual combination of gentle intensity. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (96)A pale colour with a lime tint. Backward but powerful, as it should be. Taking time to build on the palate, with a mineral thread of acidity, pure white fruit, expertly poised. There may be weightier examples around, but this is certainly very fine. Drink from 2030-2040. Tasted: October 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-96)From domaine fruit, picked on 26th August. 35% new wood from various forests. A deeper lemon yellow. Plenty of tension on the nose, with a breadth of apple fruit. A slight reductive quality before the oak takes over. A little youthful bitterness. I don’t find it showing at its best today but I suspect that there is more to this to emerge later. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: November 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (96-98)Still on its fine lees. A fine fresh very pale primrose colour. Super discreet nose, just offering some light floral notes at first, but you know there is so much more to come. It is not over exuberant but the fruit comes across the palate in little wavelets, perfectly balanced acidity, the oak subsumed into the intensity of the fruit. The 2022 Marquis de Laguiche Montrachet bows out with a wonderfully long and fine finish. Drink from 2034-2045. Tasted: November 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94-97)Recently stirred so cloudy. Affects the bouquet too, so that is hard to judge. Unquestioned weight, plenty of energy, the lees with the wood shows more at the finish. No reason why this should not be an excellent wine. Another sample was produced, representing the component raised in foudre only, 10 barrels worth, so one third of the whole, has a clear pale lemon and lime colour. The fruit is clearly ripe but with no signs of exotic fruit. This fills the palate beautifully, a little citrus, enough white fruit flesh and then a long stony finish. Absolutely what it should be, and in 2022 something more. Drink from 2032-2040+. Tasted: October 2023. |

Savour the exquisite Louis Michel & Fils Chablis Grand Cru Grenouilles 2022, a superior embodiment of prestigious Chardonnay hailing from the illustrious winemaking genealogy of the Michels. This commanding Grand Cru unearths its strength from the mineral-rich soils of the Grenouilles vineyard, located in the heart of the celebrated Chablis region of Burgundy, France. In the skilful hands of Guillaume Michel, the wine undergoes a maturation process for 12 to 16 months in stainless steel tanks, preserving the natural complexity and authenticity of its character. The end product is a striking white wine boasting an impressive harmony of elegance, power, and freshness. It captivates with a bouquet of white fruits and floral hints, a palate of concentrated, ripe fruits, pleasantly underpinned by a biting minerality. Imbibe the true essence of Louis Michel & Fils Chablis Grand Cru Grenouilles 2022, a treasure of the Michel legacy. |

The Louis Michel Chablis Grand Cru Vaudesir 2022 is a majestic embodiment of terroir expression from one of Burgundy's revered family wineries. This Chardonnay boasts resolute complexity, offering a bouquet characterised by touches of lemon curd, vanilla, and flinty mineral nuances. Hand-picked in the prestigious Vaudésir vineyard estate in Chablis - a terroir revered for its Kimmeridgian soil, the grapes were cool-fermented and matured in stainless steel tanks to preserve their inherent integrity. Louis Michel, a winemaking luminary since 1850, utilises traditional methodology, no oak regime, and minimal intervention to foster wines of transcendent quality and typicity. A notable feature of this illustrious house - their propensity for precision viticulture is commendably demonstrated in Louis Michel Chablis Grand Cru Vaudesir 2022. A distinguished wine of elegance and minerality, it is expressive of its unique origin, concluding with an irresistible saline finish. A truly exceptional illustrative of Grand Cru Chablis. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (96-98)One barrel which is by measure – 280 litres, made with new dowels but one year old ends. A fuller yellow, with massive energy, multiple fruits through the yellow and white spectra, yet also rich summer flowers. Impressive density as one would hope, then firm acidity behind, still such a baby, and then suddenly the wine kicks on to another dimension at the finish, with a reprise of all the fruits and a greater sense of harmony. Drink from 2030-2040. Tasted: October 2023. |

Vinous (91-93)The 2022 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru has a mineral-driven, obdurate nose that you might presume derives from a cooler growing season. Subtle petrichor/wet pavement aromas intermix with sea spray. The palate is well-balanced with a lovely creamy texture, vanilla mixed with orange rind and tangerine. There’s fine depth, though I prefer the precision of the VIrondot and Caillerets. However, it will surely mature beautifully in bottle. |
