Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-96)
Fine mid purple. Two barrels, two producers, some Mazoyères mixed in. 100% new wood, grains fins. This also is pretty massive, though that perhaps hides the character of Charmes whereas it supports Clos Vougeot. Still, it is important to defend a little more extraction at a time when too many feet are being taken too far off the pedal. There is a light and unimportant toasty reduction, plus some of the sweet Charmes strawberry fruit, then a crunchy mineral note to the finish. A little bit dissociated at the moment but scored for its definite potential. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: November 2023.In Bond£1,325.00 -

5 barrels, two from Petit Maupertuis destemmed, three others which are in new barrels and with 100% whole bunch vinification. The Clos Vougeot is very reductive at first, though this starts to blow off. There is a huge volume of fruit though and the two halves seem to marry up. Actually, rather an astonishing weight of fruit at the back of the palate. Definitely a Vin de Garde. This still needs more elevage but is very promising. Drink from 2032-2040. Mind-blowingly deep and subtle nose of stone fruit with citrusy nuances. All the density of Batard, but with such elegance at the extremely long, focused finish. Great potential! From old vines purchased in 2008.In Bond£1,000.00 -

A sleeping giant! Incredibly complex structure with enormous earthy depth, the sweet fruit really coming through in the spectacular finish. Wild energy! Long term stuff, but the aftertaste is incredible. In Bond£1,158.00 -

30% whole bunch vinification. The colour is more purple than crimson. The bouquet is extremely elegant and shows some concentration. A slightly firm finish at the moment but the elevage is not finished yet, and this should be resolved with extra time. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£1,000.00 -
James Suckling (96-97)
Quite a shy nose, but on the palate this is so dense without the slightest hint of heaviness. All red fruits with an almost lemony freshness at the long, intensely mineral finish. Great potential! In Bond£1,970.00 -

Vinous - Neal Martin (94-96)
The 2022 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru is missing the same cohesion and presence as the Latricières at the moment, though it has an attractive rose bush/potpourri scent that emerges with time. The medium-bodied palate has a tad more angularity than the Latricières and fine mineralité, edgy and linear with a strict, tensile, lightly spiced finish. What you might term a "grower", aloof, but the sapidity draws you back. Excellent. In Bond£1,000.00 -

Wine Advocate (95-97)
As usual, the 2022 Musigny Grand Cru is a micro-cuvée from a tiny 0.03-hectare parcel. Wafting from the glass with aromas of black cherries, wild berries, incense, licorice and exotic spices, it's full-bodied, seamless and perfumed, with a deep and multidimensional core of fruit, supple tannins and a long, resonant, intensely saline finish. In Bond£1,995.00 -

From Les Treux. 50% whole bunches on younger vines, which were planted in 2001. A deep and even purple. This is very substantial, rather a classic Felettig, less nuanced than some though certainly with a fine depth of flavour. No doubt about the density, has it just surrendered a touch of elegance? The 2022 Corton Grand Cru comes from a parcel within the lieu-dit of Le Charlemagne. It has quite a serious bouquet, tightly wound. This will need time to open but is extremely well-defined with a sense of Pinot classicism. It doesn't sing 'n dance. The palate is well-balanced, the 25% new oak seamlessly integrated, building discretely towards the beautifully poised finish. This Corton might be easily overlooked, but for me, it epitomizes how far this Grand Cru has improved in recent years. Wonderful. In Bond£775.00 -

The 2022 Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru has a terse, stony bouquet with touches of granite, orange pith and grilled walnut aromas that gradually gather momentum in the glass. The palate is very well-balanced, with a reductive note lending tension and poise. Surfeit with energy, this fans out wonderfully and is one of the longest in the mouth. Due to be bottled next spring, this is a magnificent Criots. In Bond£1,000.00 -

Vinous (95-97)
The 2022 Montrachet Grand Cru is the only cuvée in two one-year-old barrels. I don't think it needs new oak. There is real energy and complexity here, orange pith and lemon verbena, touches of lemon curd. The palate is beautifully balanced with great depth and power, far more than the Bâtard-Montrachet. It has a beguiling length and precision, velvety smooth, with a hint of walnut on the finish. Divine. In Bond£1,000.00 -

A glowing pale yellow. Super-concentrated if not yet very yielding bouquet. Extra tension here, certainly some depth, but perhaps more in class than power. That will change with time – the class with remain but the depth will expand. White fruit, tension, some youthful bitters, but keeping itself to itself for the moment. Really very long finish though. Mostly Aloxe with a touch of Pernand. Quite a full lemon yellow. The bouquet offers a balanced ripeness, with flinty notes more than opulent fruit. Purple in the centre with a lighter rim. The nose speaks a little of its oak and a lot of its fruit, a riper style of red berries, yet with good acidity behind, indeed quite fresh at the finish after a slight heaviness up front. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: December 2023.In Bond£1,000.00 -
